OT: LEAFS make huge moves, MLSE willing to spend after all?

Post#1 » by Devon_s_biring » Sun Jan 31, 2010 5:14 pm

Although not 100% confirmed, the leafs have made the following trades:

The Calgary Flames have traded defenceman Dion Phaneuf, forward Fredrik Sjostrom, and defenceman Keith Aulie to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for forwards Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, Jamal Mayers and defenceman Ian White.

http://tsn.ca/

and not as certain as the above trade:

These deals have the leafs eating a lot of money, possibly even going into the tax. I have no clue as to how the CBA works in the NHL, but if the Leafs go into the nhl's luxury tax with support from MLSE, how does this impact the decision to do the same with the Raptors?

Basically, with these huge moves for the leafs, are the raptors less likely to be allowed to go into the tax ???

Since there is a hard salary cap in the NHL, I don't know how you come to the conclusion that MLSE is "willing to spend".

There is no such thing as paying luxury tax in the NHL now.

It has no impact on the Raptors whatsoever. It does show the value of having competent general managers - or at least guys with big stones - running the two teams, as opposed to Babcock and Ferguson who were junior guys and comparatively timid.

The only thing that these trade mean is that you won't be seeing the Raptors getting much attention in the upoming weeks.

Other than that the Leafs will still suck, they have no scorers now.

Leafs suck pretty bad, I don't know why you would start a thread about them here?

Acquiring Phaneuf is very impressive, but it doesn't change the fact that it's still "GOLF LEAFS GOLF"

I thought the NHL would have a luxury tax system somewhat like the NBA and i stand corrected that they have no such thing.

I do have a strong feeling however, that the Raptors will be having a lot of games moved to tsn2, so people can be disappointed by a new Leafs team ... again ...

Well, there are loopholes in their CBA just like ours, Burke can take some over the hill veterans and bury their contracts in the minors, very few teams have the financial backing to do that.

wooooooooo

Although the leafs are still bad , Dion Phaneuf is my favourite Canadian defensemen

I heard we also traded Vesa Toskala for JS Giguere
and Burke is not done yet.

Things are starting to get exciting

Obviously if the Leafs pick up these players it means MLSE is going to trade all Raptors core players for scrubs. Mostly likely they will keep the Raptors around to clean the Leafs dressing room.

Jeez, why do Raptors fans have such an inferiority complex about hockey. The puckheads are out to get us!

Why it it beyond the comprehension of some that MLSE wants both the Leafs and Raptors to succeed? Have they actually done anything to prove otherwise???

See the TSN2 fiasco, and record low ratings for the Raptors

The TSN2 fiasco was Rogers fault, and the record low ratings were because the team was bad. Most Canadians would rather watch a bad hockey team than a bad basketball team.

MLSE gave tsn Raptors TV rights, tsn went and put a majority of games on tsn2 and used the raptors as leverage against Rogers ... MLSE allowed it to happen by selling the rights w/ or w/o knowledge of what would occur and thereby left a lot of us without a legitimate and quality means of watching Raptors basketball. MLSE cost Raptors fans ...
