KMart will probably play 38ish MPG on return, and I'm sure between either Evans, Rodriguez or Casspi (maybe) they can fill the other 10. Casspi and Greene look locked in for the meantime at SF which leaves only PF and C. Perhaps Thompson can switch to Center for periods, but after this season, Kenny Thomas will be gone, and it's not like John Brockman or Sean May are capable backups to Hawes or Thompson.
I'd just assumed it filled more of a hole if they went with a bigman. Saves them chasing unneeded Free Agents.
1. Thompson cannot play center. He's tall but he sometimes gets pushed around by PFs. Even Hayes of all centers can move him.
2. Hawes plays like PF. He can handle really big and not particularly quick centers (see Bynum, Andrew) but he can't keep anyone off D glass and is not really an inside presence.
These facts mean Kings should go after PF/Cs or true Cs who
a) control D glass
b) control paint
Among elite prospects only Aldrich does both things and is within realm of possibility unless Kings luck out at ping pong and have a shot at Favors.
Cousins does a) and maybe serviceable at b), Alabi has it visa versa.
