The Wizards need to focus on the Summer of 2011. They can get Durant or Melo with enough cap space by making trades like this:

Knicks trade:
Jeffries (Expires in 2011)
Curry (Expires in 2011)
Douglas
2012 First rounder
2014 First Rounder
2010 2nd Round pick
2011 2nd Round pick

Wizards trade:
Miller
James
Expiring contract (Crittendon or Oberto)

Maybe the Knicks include a young player like Chandler, Gallanari, and Hill. The Knicks definitely do that because it gives them a legit shot at LeBron.

Someone explain to me the obsession with getting under the luxury tax? Who cares if the Wizards have to spend $5-6 Million because they are $3 Million over the Tax. Going under the tax doesn't really give the Wizards any advantages.

It's not an obsession. I don't care if the owner spends $50,000,000 over, and has to pay $50,000,000 in luxury tax, if the team is good. But why trade away two quality players, one of whom would be returning next year and both of whom should have had value to contenders, merely to shed a few million this year and a few million next year.If they shed $5 million, that's $10,000,000 with the tx, plus maybe anothe $2 million in luxury tax distribution, plus shedding $2 million in unwanted salary next year (the difference between Stevenson and Ross). that's $14 million, and then a GM could hold out for expirings and picks in all subsequent trades (especially Miller, who's expiring anyway). If you can come away with $14 million in savings, fans can understand that; if helps get picks later, they can understand it even more; if it helps get to an extremely low payroll that allows taking bad expirings for huge payroll teams in exchange for picks or prospects, maybe someday, the fans will be watching their team win a championship.

Not an obsession, just an interest.

There was a lot of talk of a follow-up trade involving Oberto or Crittenton for the Dallas TPE. That better happen or EG just got taken to school.

I've tried to be fair-minded about EG but this is just unbelievable. I can understand the lack of future prospects if EG was given the order to cut salary and get under the luxtax at all costs, but it's pathetic that he couldn't even accomplish that. For heaven's sake, I bet Haywood alone could have been traded for enough raw cap space to get under the luxtax.

UPDATE: Mike Fisher at DallasBasketball.com, who's really the go-to guy for Mavericks rumors (he called this portion of the deal a few days ago), says there's actually a second portion of this trade. Dallas has a $2.9 million trade exception from their trade with the Nets, which basically means they can take back any one player who makes between $1.4 and $2.9 million without trading anyone. The two teams are still discussing which Wizards player will go back for that trade exception. The choices are Andray Blatche (no way), Nick Young (doubt it), Fabricio Oberto (please) and Javaris Crittenton (pretty please)

Okay. That's better. At least with the dump of Oberto or Crittenton, the trade makes at least some logical sense. Don't get me wrong, I'm as mad as the next guy at not getting any future prospects back, but I can at least intellectually understand ownership's desire to get under the luxtax and save a boatload of money.

Assuming Oberto is included in Part II, the Wizards will have saved $4.2M in cap dollars. That's still not enough to get under the luxtax without further trades. I'm a little surprised that Singleton was included on the way back. The trade worked without him and would have gotten us completely out of the luxtax. I suppose we could ship out DMac and Oberto in Part II.

Nevertheless, we saved about $2M in prorated salary, $4.2M in luxtax payments, and assuming we dump another $600K in a Jamison trade, we will save another $4M in luxtax redistribution. We also saved $4.1M next year with Stevenson gone. All told, we saved about $14.3M in the transaction (plus the $10.6M "savings" of Butler's 2011 salary, if you want to consider the unloading of a fair market contract a savings).

Under that trade (the two trades together) the reduction in payroll is $4.2 million, according to the trade machine. Don't they have to cut $4.75 million in salary? If he gets that close but just misses the cut . . . he just misses the cut, again. If Singleton hadn't been in it, the trade would have worked.

QUESTION: Is the TPE figure applied to the full year salary of only to the remaining salary? In other words could a $2 million TPE be used for a $4 million contract that has half a year left, or only for a $2 million contract?

What concerns me is that, by my calculations, Blatche is the only contract large enough to get us under the luxtax. The other option would be to trade Oberto plus either DMac or Boykins for their TPE.
