Game Thread 65: Detroit Pistons at Boston Celtics
Tip: 8 p.m., ESPN
Probable Starters: DET - G: Rodney Stuckey, Rip Hamilton; F: Tayshaun Prince, Jonas Jerebko; C: Jason Maxiell.
BOS - G: Rajon Rondo, Ray Allen; F: Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett; C: Kendrick Perkins.

Notes: Hopefully, the Pistons have another good effort against the Celtics in them, since this is a national TV game on ESPN and all. It's not like winning in Boston is as daunting a task as it once was. The Celts are reeling a bit, were completely out-classed in yesterday's ABC game against Cleveland and got booed on their homecourt in a 20-point loss to Memphis last week. Boston is one of few teams that has athleticism comparable to Detroit (not a compliment to Boston). Other than Rajon Rondo and Nate Robinson, the Celtics are pretty stiff up front with KG, Rasheed Wallace and Kendrick Perkins. Paul Pierce and Ray Allen are showing signs of age. Backup guard Marquis Daniels doesn't really handle or shoot particularly well. While Boston is in need of a win and certainly more talented than Detroit, the Pistons have the kind of pesky lineup of hustle players that can give Boston some problems.

Last Meeting: A 105-100 Celtics win March 2.

Bulls' Rose 'probably' out Tuesday
Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose is doubtful for Tuesday's game against the Memphis Grizzlies, and he may be out until the weekend.

The Bulls are riding a seven-game losing streak.

Rose, who missed Friday's game against the Miami Heat after suffering a sprained left wrist Thursday in Orlando, was severely limited in practice on Monday. "It's still sore a little bit, but if you want me to go out there and play, I will," Rose said. "That's not an issue for me to go out there and play, but I'm just going to do the smart thing. "If they want me to wait, I'll wait."

Pistons' Tayshaun Prince injured in first quarter against Celtics
Detroit Pistons forward Tayshaun Prince left tonight's game against the Boston Celtics in the first quarter after taking a knee to the back from teammate Jason Maxiell. ESPN reported that Prince is not expected to return to the game.

The Pistons were also without center Ben Wallace (right knee) and guard Rodney Stuckey (illness). Freep.com reported today that Stuckey could return to practice Thursday.

Prince injures back vs. Celtics
The Boston Celtics hope to bounce back from a tough loss in Cleveland on Sunday when they welcome Eastern Conference also-ran Detroit to Beantown.Tayshaun Prince limped off the court with assistance during the first quarter. Prince fell backward and collided with teammate Jason Maxiell after a shot attempt. Prince stayed on the floor for several minutes, holding his back, while doctors attended to him.

He was helped off the floor, limping. The team said he would not return to the game. The nature or extent of the injury was not immediately clear. Prince missed 26 games earlier in the season with a back injury.

The Pistons continue to play out the string and are coming off a 112-99 loss to Atlanta in Dixie on Saturday. They are virtually assured of missing the playoffs for the first time since 2000-01. These team teams have split a pair of meetings in Auburn Hills this season.

Celtics coast to 119-93 victory over Pistons
Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Michael Finley scored 15 points apiece, and Kevin Garnett had 14 points and eight rebounds on Monday night to help the Boston Celtics coast to a 119-93 victory over the Detroit Pistons. Boston rested its starters in the fourth quarter while beating up on a non-contender for the second straight home game. But in between was a 104-93 loss at Cleveland that could be a more important measurement of where the Celtics stand in the playoff hunt. Will Bynum had 16 points and seven assists, and Jason Maxiell had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Pistons, who lost their second straight game and their ninth out of 11. Rookie Jonas Jerebko scored all 10 of his points in the third quarter.

Detroit lost starting forward Tayshaun Prince with 4:53 left in the first quarter when he was kneed in the back by Maxiell. Prince fell backward into Maxiell's knee, then remained on the floor for several minutes, holding his back, before limping off with assistance. He did not return. Prince, who played 82 games in each of the previous six seasons, missed 26 games early this season with a back injury. Pierce scored 12 points in the first 6:39 of the game and helped the Celtics open an 18-point lead in the first quarter. He played just 30 seconds in the second quarter, when the Celtics used a 19-5 run to open a 29-point lead, before picking up his third foul. He wasn't needed much in the second half, either. Boston led by as many as 33 points, 82-49, but the Pistons cut it to 19 at the end of three.

NOTES: Another development that Red Auerbach would have never allowed: Fans did the wave in the second quarter. Longtime observers said they could not remember that happening at a Celtics home game, ever. ... Allen passed George Gervin and moved into 31st place on the NBA's career scoring list with 20,716. ... Pistons guard Rodney Stuckey missed his fifth straight game since collapsing on the bench during a game at Cleveland and being taken away on a stretcher. ... Three-time Slam Dunk Competition champion Nate Robinson was called for a technical foul for hanging on the rim after a breakaway dunk in the final minute. ... The Celtics beat Indiana by 19 on Friday.

Prince hurt; Pistons beat up
Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Michael Finley each scored 15 points as the Pistons lost to the Celtics, 119-93, tonight in Boston. Will Bynum had 16 points and seven assists for the Pistons, who lost Tayshaun Prince in the first quarter to an apparent back injury. Prince drove to the basket and fell hard. He instantly grabbed his lower back and stayed on the floor, face down. After several minutes, Prince was helped to his feet and was escorted gingerly back to the locker room. Earlier in the season, Prince missed 26 games with a ruptured disc in his lower back.

The Celtics shot 62% (46-for-74) from the field and 44% (7-for-16) from the three-point line. They had 34 assists to Detroit's 17 and outrebounded the Pistons, 36-27. Boston had seven players in double figures. Kevin Garnett had 14 points and eight rebounds, Glen Davis had 13 and Kendrick Perkins and Marquis Daniels each scored 11. The Pistons started the game with a 4-0 lead, but from there, the Celtics went on a 20-5 run to take a double-digit lead. In the second, Boston went on a 9-0 run to lead by 26 with 3:25 to go. At the half, the Celtics were up, 64-35. Boston continued to pour it on the Pistons, increasing its lead to 82-49 when Garnett scored his eighth point of the third quarter. Detroit closed the quarter on an 18-7 run to trim the lead to 19 going into the fourth.

The Celtics reasserted themselves to start the final period, outscoring Detroit, 11-2, to take a 100-72 lead with 8:37 to play. Richard Hamilton scored 14. Jason Maxiell had 11 points and 10 rebounds and Ben Gordon scored 11. DaJuan Summers had 12 points and Jonas Jerebkso scored 10. Detroit shot 49% (33-for-68) from the field. The Pistons trailed, 31-15, after one. Pierce had 12 points in the opening quarter.

Pistons coach John Kuester: Rodney Stuckey could practice Thursday
Detroit Pistons coach John Kuester indicated in pregame comments before tonight’s game against the Celtics that Rodney Stuckey could return to practice Thursday.

He reiterated to the Boston media that Stuckey is doing great 10 days after he left the arena on a stretcher after collapsing during a loss at Cleveland. Stuckey said after Saturday night’s loss at Atlanta that he would like to practice before returning to the floor. The team's next practice is Thursday after Tuesday’s home game against the Cavs and an off day Wednesday.

Stuckey is missing his fifth straight game tonight and Ben Wallace (sore right patellar tendon) is missing his seventh straight.

NBA Game Summary - Detroit at Boston
Final Score: Boston 119, Detroit 93
Paul Pierce was one of three Boston players to record 15 points and the Celtics surged to a big halftime lead before beating the short-handed Detroit Pistons, 119-93, at TD Garden. Ray Allen and Michael Finley also scored 15 as the Celtics won for the sixth time in nine games and bounced back from an 11-point loss at Cleveland Sunday afternoon. Kevin Garnett notched 14 points and eight rebounds, while Glen Davis scored 13 for the Celtics, who shot 62.2 percent from the field. That included an incredible 13-of-15 effort in the fourth quarter.Boston, which also received 11 points from Kendrick Perkins and Marquis Daniels, is a half-game behind idle Atlanta for the third-best record in the Eastern Conference. Detroit center Ben Wallace missed his seventh straight game due to a sore right knee. The team, which is also playing without Rodney Stuckey, lost forward Tayshaun Prince to a back injury in the first quarter. Will Bynum had 16 points and seven assists for Detroit, which lost for the ninth time in 11 games. Jason Maxiell chipped in 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Pistons, who have dropped seven in a row on the road.

With 4:53 remaining in the opening quarter, Prince went to the hoop and collided with Perkins. As he was falling down, Prince's back hit the knee of Maxiell. Prince remained on his stomach in obvious pain for a few minutes before finally being helped to his feet and to the locker room. He did not return to the game. The Celtics sparkled with a 16-1 burst in the first quarter, a period dominated by Pierce's 12 points -- all of which came during the run for an 18-7 lead. The flurry helped Boston to a 31-15 lead after 12 minutes. Allen's three-pointer ended an 11-2 flurry for a 55-29 cushion with 3:35 left in the half, and it was 64-35 at intermission. Even though the Pistons shot 12-of-17 in the third quarter, they still looked up at the scoreboard through 36 minutes, trailing 89-70. The Celtics then put the game away by scoring nine straight early in the fourth for a commanding 102-72 margin following a Finley jumper inside eight minutes remaining.

Game Notes
Boston has a better road record (22-12) than home mark (20-12) this season...Detroit fell to 7-26 on the road...The Celtics won the season series, 2-1...Bynum was in the starting lineup again for Stuckey, who missed his fifth straight game after collapsing on the bench during a loss in Cleveland on March 5...Richard Hamilton had 14 points for Detroit...Boston converted 18 Detroit turnovers into 27 points.

Carmelo Anthony scored 45 points for the Nuggets, but missed a 3-point try at the buzzer. Luis Scola grabbed the final rebound and finished with 23 points and 11 boards.
