Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Michael Finley each scored 15 points as the Pistons lost to the Celtics, 119-93, tonight in Boston. Will Bynum had 16 points and seven assists for the Pistons, who lost Tayshaun Prince in the first quarter to an apparent back injury. Prince drove to the basket and fell hard. He instantly grabbed his lower back and stayed on the floor, face down. After several minutes, Prince was helped to his feet and was escorted gingerly back to the locker room. Earlier in the season, Prince missed 26 games with a ruptured disc in his lower back.
The Celtics shot 62% (46-for-74) from the field and 44% (7-for-16) from the three-point line. They had 34 assists to Detroit's 17 and outrebounded the Pistons, 36-27. Boston had seven players in double figures. Kevin Garnett had 14 points and eight rebounds, Glen Davis had 13 and Kendrick Perkins and Marquis Daniels each scored 11. The Pistons started the game with a 4-0 lead, but from there, the Celtics went on a 20-5 run to take a double-digit lead. In the second, Boston went on a 9-0 run to lead by 26 with 3:25 to go. At the half, the Celtics were up, 64-35. Boston continued to pour it on the Pistons, increasing its lead to 82-49 when Garnett scored his eighth point of the third quarter. Detroit closed the quarter on an 18-7 run to trim the lead to 19 going into the fourth.
The Celtics reasserted themselves to start the final period, outscoring Detroit, 11-2, to take a 100-72 lead with 8:37 to play. Richard Hamilton scored 14. Jason Maxiell had 11 points and 10 rebounds and Ben Gordon scored 11. DaJuan Summers had 12 points and Jonas Jerebkso scored 10. Detroit shot 49% (33-for-68) from the field. The Pistons trailed, 31-15, after one. Pierce had 12 points in the opening quarter.
