Phil Jackson Could be an Option

Post#1 » by ChampionRed » Thu Apr 29, 2010 4:22 pm

As the coaching search starts to heat up, Phil Jackson could be a potential option this summer.

According to Netsdaily:

Thorn, who has a history of elevating assistant coaches to the top job, has said some candidates may be coaching in the NBA playoffs. His description of an ideal candidate had people speculating he was talking about Tom Thibodeau of the Celtics. But another candidate whose team is still in the hunt is Blazers' assistant Monty Williams who played in New York for the Knicks and likes the coaching style of Pat Riley. He's been an assistant in Portland for five years. The Daily News reports his name has come up in the Nets' coaching hunt.

Meanwhile, Phil Jackson and his longtime girlfriend (and Laker owner daughter) Jeanie Buss both suggested that the Hall of Fame coach might not be back in Los Angeles next year. Buss' father doesn't want to pay Jackson the $12 million he's currently making, although if the Lakers win again, it's likely he'll relent. Buss said, "There's going to be a lot of good jobs that come up this summer." Prokhorov was reportedly ready to offer Mike Krzyzewski $12 million a year. Jackson, 64, is a year older than Coach K.

"I know Phil will be coaching next year, somewhere. Whether it's here or someplace else I don't know," Buss said. "There's going to be a lot of good jobs that come up this summer."

Buss wouldn't elaborate on which jobs might interest Jackson if he doesn't extend his career with the Lakers. But she was emphatic that the choices aren't limited to Jackson returning to the Lakers or retiring.

"I know that he can't just retire," she said. "I'm like, 'Honey, what are you going to do? Are you going to help your kids go change diapers and stuff?' "

"I think if they win, it's like a no-brainer he'll come back because he'll want to win three in a row," Jeanie Buss said. "But [if they don't win], if there isn't that connection, he would understand.

"Plus, my dad has made it very clear he doesn't want to pay him what he's been paying him. So that's kind of hard, too. You could kind of say, in some jobs, well, I'm cutting back your hours. But can you see him cutting back his hours?

It's unlikely but just imagine the possibilities! Players would WANT to play for the Nets if a coach like Phil was brought in.

Even if he is an option which i seriously doubt. It is highly unlikely that a championship coach is gonna come coach the worst team ever. Thats A, and B, he isn't even a good fit here. He isn't the turn a franchise around type of coach, he is take a contender to the next level type coach.

Money talks but Phil Jackson isn't going to put himself through a rebuilding process he's just going to use the Nets as leverage to get that fat contract from the Lakers.

More than half of those coaches either are or would be awful.

Yeah this isnt the ideal place for Phil, but imagine being the Coach with the biggest turnaround in a year on the history books. That should stroke his ego.

I know, its just a list of EVERYBODY that is available. I might have missed a few names but i dont think i missed many (Izzo and Calipari are not available). I can also guarantee that our next coach is in that list.

I like Thibodeau he is a strong defensive minded coach and I think he is my top choice. After that I wouldn't mind Coach K or Avery. Wright and Messina are intersting young minds but not sure what you will get from them. Then if they all fall though then we can sart looking into the old coaches like JVG. So I guess my order is:

1. Thibodeau
2. Coach K
3. Avery (I have faith in him because he was the only one to get that soft Maverick team into the finals, so there must be something there)
4. Messina/Jay Wright
5. JVG

I would be happy with any of the 6 metioned but definately think we should target those top 3.

I would love to have Phil but let's be real here, he isn't coming to new jersey, even if Prok throws 15 mil at him(or would he?)...Also my list would be:

JVG
Fratello
Avery
Thibodeau

I'd much rather have an experienced coach, which is why Thibodeau isn't above Fratello and Avery, but I wouldn't mind him either.

I don't like the idea of the Little General and I'm lukewarm at best for Thibodeau.

Plenty of info about other teams interviewing coaches already while the Nets are sitting on their asses. What is going on?

Could it be that our #1 target is still in the play-offs? If thats the case its clearly Thidodeau. Even so, why not interview other guys like other teams are doing. Maybe its already a done deal? It just doesn't make sense to sit around doing nothing while all the good coaches are taken off the market.

Nets can't make a move until Prokorov takes full control of the team. We can talk to people of course, but we can't talk money right now. Potential coachs will not waste their time on formal interviews until they can discuss money in the conversation as well. I'm sure they have made some inquiring calls to coaches agents but that is the fact of the matter right now.

What good coaches are being taken off taken off the market?
Del Negro hasn't even been fired yet and everything else is just rumors in local papers of who teams are interested in.
