Why for Phoenix:
We didn't expect free agency to turn out quite the way it did and our original plans to put a contender on the floor have failed. Steve Nash and Grant Hill are consumate professionals and teammates and deserve a shot at a ring before they retire; Dallas gives them that opportunity.
In return, we get Ed Davis - a lefty forward with a post game.
Petteri Koponen - a guy our scouts are very high on and someone who can run the backcourt with Dragic.
Victor Claver - a very promising international player with solid range and massive upside.
Miami's 2011 1st
and last, but certainly not least, a great deal of cap space due to Dampier's unique contract.
Though we will attempt to grab a few young players via RFA and FA, we are a team in full rebuild. We own our 2011 1st and will develop accordingly.
Now that PHX has capspace, you're more than welcome to unload salary at the price of a pick (depending, of course).
Nice dealing DAL, POR. Thanks.
Portland Accepts, and I can confirm the deal works financially.
Having landing Flynn, we feel we need a change of direction at point guard. Hinrich was a nice asset and a nice fit, but getting Miller back gives him the guy who I feel will be the better mentor, and is a slightly better playmaker than Kirk. This means I have a nicely balanced backcourt, with a driving/athletic combo at PG, and two shooters at SG.
Adding Young is another nice fit for the team, as it gives me a replacement for Batum at SF for the long-term.
I'm pretty happy with my roster now, with a solid core of Miller/JRich/Turkoglu/Aldridge/Dwight, and nice young backups who all have huge potential and give the opportunity to shake things up a bit, with Flynn/Webster/Young/Pendegraph/Hill.
