Of course he means a lot to their franchise, and of course they're desperate. That doesn't meant it's not stupid to throw $30 million at Izzo, hoping that this will convince Lebron to stay, when he clearly isn't weighing much of his decision on where he goes based on the coach.
Him not wanting his fingerprints on the coaching hire does not mean he doesn't care who the coach is or isn't weighing his decision on it. It could mean he doesn't want to give input because he doesn't want to influence Cavs decision making in the event that he may leave... it could mean that he has already decided he is leaving and doesn't want to influence their decision making for that reason.
I don't see why you would think that him not wanting to take part in the decision means that he doesn't care who the coach is in Cleveland.
And I don't see why you think giving Izzo $30 million is a smart move, with Lebron far from certain about where he will go, and potentially even leaning towards Chicago. It may be a desperate move, and it may be based more on Lebron than it is on Izzo himself. But it's not smart, because I highly doubt that is enough to sway Lebron's decision.
I could be wrong, but if I were the GM, I would focus more on upgrading my roster. Maybe that's just not possible at this point, but that would be my focus. I'd try to hire the best coach possible, but I wouldn't massively overpay for one on the off chance that Lebron is wowed by the hire.
