How can the roster be improved? Any ideas?

The only thing I came up with is working a deal with Toronto and reaching out to Bosh. I'm not sure Bosh is enough of an upgrade over Josh Smith, but it would have the added bonus of keeping him out of Miami, Chicago, or Cleveland. The issue of course would be convincing him to come here to play.

I've looked around the league to see what Marvin Williams could bring in trade, but I didn't see much that would help. If Joe resigns then I don't think Marvin will get the opportunities to improve and contribute. We need to ultimately get a cheaper contribution from that position. Jamal Crawford should be our most movable asset, but I wasn't really seeing anything that would really help the team either. The bigs that could help out are mainly free agents and the club doesn't want to use the MLE. If that wasn't the case investing in Brad Miller to be backup C would really help the team with his ability to stretch the floor.

Really I am without a good idea on how to make the team any better and that makes me sad.

League exec. says ATL owners thought for offering Joe Johnson max deal is they won't still own Hawks at end of contract to have to pay it.

UNFACKING BELIEVABLE. Im gonna hang myself if that douche signs here. Its gonna be real tough for me to cheer for this team anymore with the way we are going.

Bring in Childress or trade his rights for a Big. Adding Childress will be a big time lift.

I say bring in a backup big and see how the roster plays. I want to see marvin in a new offense first before we ship him off.

The Hawks should've drafted Whiteside to be that backup big. I still can't believe they pass up on a potential big like that.

Now it appears the Joe is coming back (which is 26% of our cap number) and the ASG not willing to exceed the cap, we have very limited options.
The best we will get for Chills is perhaps another reserve. What needs to be improved on this team is the front 5. Teague being a starter isn't going to be enough.
We haven't yet addressed the interior of this team.

Is there any cap money left once Joe signs? I think Crawford is going to have to be dealt to bring us something because he isn't replacing Joe and my guess is he wants to start again.

If you are going to sign Joe to that kind of $$, then ASG/Sund needs to improve our core 3 of Joe/Smoove/Al.

i think if Joe resigns, it will be a step back for the Hawks. once Joe signs a max with the Hawks (hopefully he doesn't) he will be one of those players that will be impossible to trade away. i also think that once Joe signs an extension with the Hawks, he will be on the decline, especially on the mental and work ethic aspect.

Atlanta’s basketball people recognize that re-signing J.J. alone isn’t enough to improve the team (because, well, it’s basically the same team) and ASG is not opposed to exceeding the luxury-tax threshold to sign the right player. That’s a good thing since they don’t have much choice.

Hawks fans have really short memories, the Hawks SUCKED before JJ got here, no playoffs, always in the lottery, no hope. JJ turned the franchise around so be glad that he wants to finish what he started rather than bail on some of you fickle fans.

This. And the nation has short memories. People were saying Joe Johnson's deal was a joke the FIRST TIME he signed here.

ANybody remember that? Wish I had the articles saved.

All he's done is turn this team around from laughing stock to 50+ win ball club

Post-Joe signing plan trying to remain somewhat realistic in the acquisitions.

Marvin Williams and a 1st rounder to Golden State for Andrins Biedrins

Josh Smith and Mike Bibby to Houston for Shane Battier, Kyle Lowry (S&T), Luis Scola (S&T) and a 1st.

Josh Childress S&T to Washington for Javale McGee (might be a pipe dream)
If that isn't possible then go after Brad Miller with the full MLE

New lineup
Jeff Teague/Kyle Lowry
Joe Johnson/Jamal Crawford/Jordan Crawford
Shane Battier/Mo Evans
Al Horford/Luis Scola
Adrins Biedrins/McGee or Miller/Zaza Pachulia

reasons for and why it could happen:
The Golden State deal is about swapping players who dropped off after signing big contracts to hope that situation changes help both. Throwing in a pick because Center is harder to fill than SF/PF. If necessary I'd get creative on the pick protection to make it more attractive or add a second pick to the puzzle to get this done, but that's a last resort if they play tough.

The Houston deal is a response to them chasing a top PF like Bosh or Amare in S&T and coming up short. Josh Smith isn't the level of shooter, but he is a better help defender and could explode in kept near the basket. This is about getting Al to PF as well. As for what we get back Lowry is a less expensive PG who can help ease the transition to Teague. Battier is expiring and is brought in as a glue guy to do whatever the lineup on the floor needs. He also raises the collective basketball IQ of the Hawks which is important. Scola was mentioned as who they were dangling for the PF upgrade so I just jumped on that. The pick is because the value still wasn't quite right. I sent Bibby back because he would be a good backup for Aaron Brooks and that lineup would hid his defensive flaws (with Yao and Josh in the middle). Next season he's a expiring contract they can turn into another asset. If Scola is a breaking point I'd do it for Chuck Hayes and another pick as well.

The Washington deal was because of their rumored interest in Childress. I doubt actually getting McGee back, but it was worth a mention. We have to stick to our guns that we'll match his contract if they don't do the deal. I know that Childress could be our Battier, but he's been very candid about not wanting to play here again.

The pursuit of Brad Miller depends on the resolution of the Childress situation. If we don't add another C there we need pursue one. With Haywood likely to resign in Dallas I was left with Brad Miller or Jermaine O'Neal and while O'Neal might match up better with Dwight Howard I worry about his motivation. Miller can still stretch the floor which would be handy.

The impetus behind this plan was actually Joe's criticism of the locker room. I hate giving up Josh, but Al seems like a more solid building block and I want to make him happy by getting him in a better position to thrive. I know there is a feeling that we need an elite PG, but I don't really believe that Chris Paul is available. It might be worth it to not to do the Houston deal and wait to see about Paul, but do we even have the right pieces to get him if becomes available? Lowry isn't great but he's good and defensively an improvement which is what we really need. The overall success of this plan depends on Al thriving at the 4. Biedrins bouncing back at the 5 in a new system and of course Teague at PG. We should be stronger defensively even given up our best help defender because we improved in perimeter and positional D. I think the lineup could be better poised for post-season success because of the defense.

Still don't like the Joe contract, but that's my idea to make the best of it.
