Not to mention at the time, Phil Jackson was rumored to be retiring very shortly and Rambis was to take over. A pretty sweet gig for him that he gave up.
I think if I recall, I was hoping for Avery Johnson.
Rambis was a Laker, has ties to the organization, but he was going to be beaten by Byron Scott if not Brian Shaw. People like getting assistant from winning teams, Rambis was an assistant for the Lakers thus was a "coaching prospect" still has done nothing to make me believe he is a decent coach. Coachs can not make their guys play good D, they can only coach effort. If a guy is loafing they get dealt with.
Generating schemes to utilize the team you have is what makes a coach what they are. If a team w/o a known coach is projected as a 10 win team, and the team gets 20 wins, they did well. Competing is the best way to judge a team, if a team looks defeated before the seasons starts, game starts, THERE IS A PROBLEM. If rambis and his top player continue to throw others under the bus and not take credit for things (like Jeff Van Gundy did, seriously that guy looked like he physically abused himself after losses)
Coaches will get tuned out eventually -- Sam Mitchell, Lawrence Frank but at least they at one point got the most out of the pieces.
