Well, there are two reasons as to why that's occurred. One which is unjustified, while the other is perfectly justifiable.
The unjust cause is that Oregon was ranked higher in the preseason polls, and people don't have flexible minds on average and want to confirm their original opinions out of bias.
The just cause is that the evidence suggests Auburn almost surely cheated to be in their current position, or at the very least Newton, the only reason they are near undefeated, should have been ineligible from the beginning. Therefore, many pollsters are resorting to jury nullification to create some level of justice. I personally wouldn't even have Auburn in the top 15 for that reason because they wouldn't be there with by far the best player in the country, who has propelled them to a number of close wins where they wouldn't have prevailed otherwise. Sure, let's punish him and their program afterward, still giving them the experience and credit in the interim, and screwing out a more deserving team of their just rewards.
