Re: Ime Udoka
When we got him the first time around the thinking was he was going to be groomed as a Bowen replacement. That never quite panned out obviously. But he was a serviceable player, decent from long range and a competent defensive player.
I think he's a good short term option for the team. What are the terms? 10 day contracts etc. ?

Re: Ime Udoka
I don't think Udoka is the short term guy here. I'm thinking if the Spurs are going to continue tinkering with that 13th spot, the next guy they cut is Chris Quinn. Not Udoka.

Re: Ime Udoka
He's a decent pickup. He knows the system, knows the players, he's a decent defender and an alright shooter.

Of course it's for the 12-13th spot, but the only good thing about Udoka is that the "knows" the system, but how worthy is that if you are not good at anything (just decent) and you are going to play 5 minutes per game with good luck?
i'd rather have a good shooter or a good defender..I don't know very much of Danny Green, but at least he was young..

Re: Ime Udoka
I would rather have Udoka in case someone gets injured. Danny Green was in a slump from summer league. At least Udoka would fill in as a serviceable system player with solid defense. Green, while long and athletic, would not often play within himself. He may be the better player at this stage, but he was not the right fit for the Spurs.

I like our pick up of Ime Udodo. He gives us some depth at the position. He knows what Pop wants and can provide 10-12 decents mins in a pinch.

Re: Ime Udoka
i still would have wanted Hughes over Udoka.
i know stats doesn't reflect ALL there is to know about a player but MOSTLY it does. i'm not an expert with the PERs but so i'll just use this:
Udoka 08-09 (SAS) stats:
FG- 38.3%
3pt FG- 32.8%
FT- 60.9%
2.8 RPG
0.8 APG
0.5 SPG
0.2 BPG
4.3 PPG
Hughes 09-10 (CHA) stats:
FG- 32.7%
3pt FG- 35.7%
FT- 85.3%
2.3 RPG
2.0 APG
0.9 SPG
0.3 BPG
8.1 PPG
i used 08-09 for Udoka- closer to his possible production now because he was playing for Pops and 09-10 for Hughes- his role in CHA will probably be the same in SA, off the bench. he was one of the main guys in NY (where he had decent stats) so i didn't use that.
the team could've gotten more if they signed Hughes. he could've played a Finley role but with the Bowen D.

Re: Ime Udoka
Hughes, as in Larry Hughes? No thanks. LH has never come close to being as good a defender as Bowen.
Udoka's been here before, that's why Pops went with him. He knows the system. LH has a bit of that "me first" gene, and wouldn't make it here.

Re: Ime Udoka
Yeah, I don't think Hughes is a good fit either.
Hughes is a SG (even thou he's the same height as Udoka) and his defensive game is his ability to steal the ball. Something the Spurs don't really like because it's a gamble and compromise the whole defense. I don't recall Hughes as a shooter either and is someone who needs the ball in the offense to contribute.

Yup, if he doesn't have the ball in his hands he's useless. I have zero interest in Hughes.
Antoine Wright on the other hand just got released by the Kings and I really think he'd be a good fit. He's a big strong wing that plays good defense and can knock down the odd jumper.

Re: Ime Udoka
i've been watching Hughes since his DC days and yes, his jumper and his volume shooting of his mother effen bricks has been the Achilles heel of his game. due to injuries, he lost his explosiveness and hence developed a "decent" midrange pull up (mostly evident in NY with D Lee pick and roll sets) and 3 pt game (in CHA).he is also a great facilitator. he could've been the solution to NY's PG problem last year if not for D'Antoni's fascination with Duhon.
there are a lot of PROs to Hughes' game that could complement Duncan's, Manu's, and Tony's game. but you got me on the gambling part.
and yeah,if the Spurs want the typical 3, they should get Wright.

Re: Ime Udoka
That is true. Adding Wright would really give them another weapon off the bench. Udoka's defense/lockerroom leadership could warrant a roster spot as well.
