Justification like... pitching being a major area of strength for our team, getting great talent in return, Marcum is probably too old (29 in a few days) to be relied upon as part of the core, and will be even older when it's time to pay up?
You're being needlessly cynical.
Not cynical, I'm just trying to understand why they traded a 3.5 WAR prospect for prospects. Doing that sets the 2011 team back significantly.

A throw in.

The Flying Gent wrote:Well, if you're not being cynical, you're being a bit illogical. There's no reason to think this is about money. I mean, this is an organization that about a year ago shelled out 10 million dollars (IIRC) just to get someone to take the best pitcher in baseball off their hands.

Hes a true competitor, a workhorse, a Gamer, and pitches well in big games against good teams.
Hes a guy you could throw out in game 2 or 3 of a playoff series and not worry about...
He showed a lot of leadership qualities this year and was the leader of this pitching staff....
Honestly he was one of the last guys I expected to be traded...
intangibles are overrated.
and replace "Marcum" with "Halliday" and you see how far 1 guy goes to get you to the promise land. and use the Halliday example to explain why AJ is now dropping big turds in the Big Apple.

Well if they trade for Greinke after this and sign him to an extension, it's certainly going to look like it was about the money. Would remind me a lot of what the Phillies did last season with Lee.

Couldn't agree less....
Burnett is a guy that is all Arm all talent....
But he has no heart, hes soft mentally....
"Intangibles are overrated"
Come on thats silly talk..... Guys like Halladay and Maddux made a career out of it....
A lot of what Marcum brought isn't measured in stats....
Guy was extremely well liked and great for team chemistry....
I worry about the message that is sends to the rest of the players that you give away
a guy who was a true solider and busted his butt.
And some people are saying 29 is old? Come on maybe in Basketball but not in Baseball....
Has Marcum most likely reached his potential? yes
But pitchers that have proved they can pitch in the AL East shouldn't be taken for granted.
Marcum had a reasonable salary as well.
Hes one of the last guys I would get rid of especially in a deal like this....
With all that said.... Im going to wait and see what we get back and see if this is a precursor
to a bigger deal.
