There really is no speculation needed here. I know your jinx thing, but Melo said what he said. If it is not clear for anyone involved, I guess it will never be clearer.
It comes down to whether there will be some teams who would accept Melo without an extension. I am sure there are. Bobcats' name is out there. I am sure 29 other teams would be also interested as long as it does not cost them much.
The question becomes whether Denver would rather keep him till the summer, which I think is a strong possibility, send him out for another team for a bad offer, which I don't think will happen, or accept a reasonable offer from the Knicks.
