Anyone who has ANY problem with this trade should leave this board.

This was a business move (saving lots of money) with an underlying practical application in that Joe Smith fills a critical NEED.

Great trade!!!! I can't believe how uninformed and ignorant some of my fellow Laker fans are. If you give up Vujachick and a 1st, you expect nothing but cap relief. In this case we got cap relief and a guy who fills a need ... absolutely great trade!!!

On another note, Caracter will eat up the D-League for the rest of the season.

Wow, thankyou for the explanation, lol!.... We basically gave up a 1-18 first round pick for 8,2M$ and Joe Smith. The reason why people didnt post about it is that its SO OBVIOUS its not worth mentioning.

As the complete details emerge, this is an excellent deal for us. We basically traded a late 1st rounder and Sasha for a couple of early 2nd rounders and salary relief. Also there's this 28 year old big Ukranian center we acquired draft rights to.

Pau Gasol 30
Artest 31
Odom 31
Kobe 32
Derek Fisher 36

At some point we´re going to need to rebuild our team....

we have sold 1st picks for the last 2 yrs, to get TPE and a 2nd that is equivalent to where we would've picked is great and that picks doesn't have a guranteed contract. I rather have a early 2nd then a late 1st. Worse comes to worse we can buy a higher pick then the one we gave away for a lot less then what we saved (probaby $3mill for late teens to early 20's) we probably be picking 3rd-4th to last in the 1st.

This is a business people.

Kupchak saved his boss [nearly] ten million dollars while making the immeadiate team better.

There is no arguement here. You have to give (in this case a 1st rd pk), to get (in this case a free year of services from the best coach ever ... Phil Jackson (10 mil per salary).

Those of you arguing are the type of people who are never satisfied or who magically think Vujacic could have been packaged with Walton for a player that can walk and chew gum at the same time.

The fact that Kupchak got two seconds out the deal and draft rights to a player who can be developed on someone else's dime is all the more appealing.

If calling people dense was too harsh, I apologize, but it is clear that if you object to this trade for whatever reason, you clearly have absolutely no understanding of how NBA teams function as businesses under the parameters of the current CBA (not that I'm Larry Coon by any stretch of the imagination).

The Euro player the Lakers got the rights to was drafted by the Grizzlies 6 yrs ago so I doubt he'll ever come to the NBA. The Warriors 2nd round pick is the best piece the Lakers got back it'll probably be in the the top 14 picks in the second round.

He is a 6,11 who plays in the Spanish League for Valencia. He is averaging something like 7 points and 5,5 rebounds in 18 minutes with 42%FG and 79%FT. Doesnt seem like a decent player....

Actually... Now that I read this trade in more detail.. The more I like it... At first I thought it would only be for cap relief.. But I was hoping to use sasha's contract in combo with picks and rookies for someone more productive... However.. It got better it's not only sasha and our 1 st for joe smith and tax relief... It's sasha and 1st for Smith and 2 2nds... Which is much better.. But we also get a tpe... I didn't realize that from the beginning... The tpe makes it soo much easier for us... Because it allows us to bide to sasha's full contract amount... We can split the tpe to acquire another player, someone with a much smaller contract... And... We don't have to worry about finding a low salary team to absorb sasha's contract.. It's already done.. We can now use our tpe to trade with other teams looking to get some cap relief... Like Orlando or etc... If their owner decide 80 mil+ is too much for them.. It makes our ability to trade with another team much broader... Something I didn't realize till now...

From what I read of Kevin Ding's twitter he seems more like a Perkins type of player. Big with a strong base and a defensive presence. He is said to be worse than Slava on offense.

Lakers save money and loose Sasha to full fill a need. A big that can we can now use rest pau and odom with.

For those of you complaining about the first round pick, when was the last time a very late first rounder alone got us or any other team a franchise changing player. Not very many times if at all.

I do agree loosing the first rounder hurt me as fan. But sometimes its difficult to see the bigger picture. Mitch gets paid the big bucks to see things that you nor I anticpate coming.

Mitch has built a winner. The last time I checked, you need a minimum of veterans who know the game, a deep bench, and defense to make it to the promise land. Thats what the Laker org has done with this trade, built a winner.

We don't use our first round picks very well anyway. lol

Here's how the deal breaks down:

Lakers Trade:

- Sasha Vujacic
- 2011 First Round Draft Choice

Lakers Receive:

- Joe Smith
- 2011 Golden State Warriors 2nd Round Pick
- 2012 Chicago Bulls 2nd Round Pick
- Rights to Ukraine’s 6'11" PF/C Sergei Lishouk, 2004 Pick of the Memphis Grizzlies, who's playing over in Spain right now.

For those of you who think that giving away the first round pick was too much, let's look back at who the Lakers have drafted late in the first round this decade:

2000 - Mark Madsen

2002 - Kareem Rush

2003 - Brian Cook

2004 - Sasha Vujacic

2006 - Jordan Farmar

2007 - Javaris Crittenton

Now you guys tell me, do we really need that first round pick again? Mitch is doing a great job at risk management by trading away late 1st round picks for early 2nd round picks that we can drop if it doesn't pan out. This is just fiscally responsible management by Mitch

Seriously comparing them to who we drafted in the 2nd round and still in the league:

Ronny Turiaf, Marc Gasol, Luke Walton and Caracter. Not bad.

Ha!
I found almost this exact same exchange from Memphis fans in 2008 when searching for info on him.

True, we will rebuild, but lets rebuild when it comes to that point. The Lakers have mostly been about championships over the years and I'm sure we can lure some super star to LA if it doesn't mean we'll draft them.

We already have quality young players like Caracter and Ebanks; I at most think they will turn out to be good role players at best that can help down the road.

i really liked this trade from the beginning.. and some seem to look at joe smith's stats this yr.. but u gota put into consideration that they have humphries who is rbding/hustling/ playing good interior D, Favors who has been playing well as a rook, and they even have Troy murphy who is way too talented to not be playing. and of course Brook lopez. joe smith can give us 5 minutes of solid ball, and thats more than vujacic could give us.

the money saved, along with 2 second rd draft picks, trade exception.. wow what a great trade. we probably wont use the tpe, but 5 million ish quality veteran that a team doesnt really need/want.. could help us big time around the trade deadline and on. Mitch and whomever are really doing a great job with these moves.

AMAZING TRADE! guille.. why u keep emphasizing 1-18 protected pick. we aint going anywhere near that anyways.. and "our players are getting old?" umm 2 second round picks are close to one of the last picks in the 1st round, without the guaranteed money as someone mentioned. this is the best case scenario. and u expect us to get even more from vujacic and a 1st? wowww

Sasha Vujacic is now engaged to tennis star and Manhattan Beach resident Maria Sharapova, and who knows how she feels about Vujacic being shipped out by the Lakers.

But Vujacic’s former girlfriend, actress Katie Cassidy, had some strong words from her Twitter account about the trade: “Oh life is great! Especially when an ex(a dirty one) gets relocated to the other side of the country! The dark cloud has vanished! Raise it up!”

Cassidy is now dating Kings hockey player Jarret Stoll.
