The rapper's background doesn't mean that he doesn't rap well...Rick Ross is one of the most fake rappers out there, but he still makes pretty good music. Why do people make such a big deal about the person's background? The only thing I can understand people not liking about a rapper is if he doesn't write his own lyrics...but then again, if the music is good, that's all I care about.
On Lowkey --> not a fan...
A persons background tells a lot about their trajectory to fame
Whats good music? How can you call Rick Ross fake and at the same time say he makes good music?
I listen to music so I can relate and feel out the story the person is telling, so how can I say he makes good music when I know hes fake?
So people with certain backgrounds only make good music (might be interpreting that wrong...)? Why should it matter if he was rich, poor, made himself, or got some help from other people along the way? Many rappers use other rappers/producers to get their names out.
Ross makes some good music (good beats, features, decent lyrics)...still not one I listen to daily - only listen to certain songs.
If you're asking for my personal taste in rap, I like Kanye, Wale, Lupe, J Cole, Jay Z, XV, Shawn Chrystopher (VERY good rapper...I recommend a listen), Donnis, Eminem (he's been growing on me lately), Jay Electronica, 50 Cent (older stuff...and some unreleased stuff/songs he's been featured on), Yonas (also very good...from NY), Drake, Tinie Tempah, Lil Wayne, B.o.B (mixtape stuff and some mainstream), Lloyd Banks, Fabolous, Kid Cudi (some), Wiz Khalifa, Tupac, Biggy (some), and Dre (don't know MANY songs by him...trying to find more stuff before Detox comes out...if it ever does lol).
I like others as well, but those are my favorites.
I listen to the music because of the beats, lyrics (stories), and just if it sounds good...I can't relate t many, if any, of the songs because I didn't grow up the same way they did. If the rapper does a good job at telling a story, that's great...if he doesn't, but has good lyrics (one-liners) or has good delivery, that's just as good...
I'll admit I can't really go into the specifics of rap as I was not listening to rap (too young) during its "peak" (and I'm just not as educated as others in the history of rap) so the stuff that I listen to/consider "good" is the stuff that I'm used to. To me, music is music...there's hardcore rap and softcore rap...a person's preference is his/her own.
