I have a question.... if we sign Melo this offseason why do we have to do a sign and trade? Most people keep suggesting wed have to do one. I never understood that. Why give the other team anything if we dont have to? Cant we just sign him straight up? I guess Im missing something but Im no guru.

im not sure why all of you are celebrating like its a done deal already, from the looks of that interview it doesn't completely shut the door on going to NJ.

haven't we learned from that certain Robin down in south beach?

If we want to keep Chandler, maybe it's best we sign and trade. Another thing, Melo would want 6 years if he opts out.

That Robin went to an instant winning situation. If the Nets were that type of opportunity I would be concerned...

To sum it up. If we do not get Melo via sign and trade it limits us as far as adding players and keeping players. However, if we get him in a sign and trade I am sure Donnie is going to stack this team so we can be in a position to have the MLE available to us in the summer...

It's hard to make heads or tails about what Melo says. If you add it all up, there are always a lot of contradictions. But part of him at least seems to want to just win and signing with the Knicks would give him his best chance at a title.

Again, his thoughts are all over the place but among his greatest wishes seems to be to win a title on a big stage with Amar'e as his wing man.

Again, a player's legacy of winning is all he has next to whatever paychecks he's collected.

So follow through Melo!

I don't think all four of those things are the case, so: NJ makes no sense.

How doesn't it make sense for NJ? Who wouldn't want to acquire a premier player in their prime...
If I'm walsh I wouldn't give Denver anything more than Curry/ Randolph....no need to try to appease their desires when there's a option of us signing melo during the off-season..
Oh and it feels good having pharmcat on ignore!

What difference does it make whether or not it makes sense for NJ?

I think its because if he leaves Denver outright he'd only be allowed to sign with us for around $16 mil per year. Denver has his bird rights so they can offer him much more money (3yrs/65mil extension) so he'd want us to do a sign and trade so he could get more money. Same reason we got amare via sign and trade so he cud get his full max money with phnx's bird rights.

Amare actually didn't sign for his full max with bird rights. We did the Amare S&T to give us a little more wiggle room in the cap b/c with the Max raises, his starting salary was a little lower. Technically Amare could have gotten a 6th year with his full max bird rights.

The premise is right though. If we do a Carmelo S&T, we can give him a longer contract/more money

It's got to be a really hard decision for him. Watching that interview you could see how he cares about this decision and everyone it would impact.

It will be interesting to see what he does.

KBerg_CBS

According to one management sourrce, Melo may not lose a dime by passing on extension because all contracts will be rolled back anyway.

As long as he cares about himself above all, then we will be fine
