Did anyone see Corbin's interview with David James last night? James asked some good questions regarding Ty's seeming reticence to give the rooks extended playing time and his philosophy about substitution patterns. He answered that he played Hayward and Favors situationally as determined by match-ups, while Bell and Elson provided a veteran presence in crunch-time situations.
I watched it and had the same impression. I thought he gave canned responses to the rookie questions.
Basically, he needs wins and he knows he won't get criticized for playing veterans. If a rookie screws up a game, Corbin will get toasted in the media and on the net.
Coaches don't like rookie's to get too much attention. This season whenever Hayward or Evans got some good press and interviews after playing well, Sloan made sure he put them back in their place right afterwards. It looks like Corbin is doing the same thing sometimes.
When rookie's get attention, it bothers the vets--sometimes a lot. I've mentioned that Millsap is very reluctant to pass the ball to Hayward, especially when he's in scoring position. The Jazz don't have any scoring plays set up for Hayward. He has to create his own openings. That's tough to do when your teammates aren't looking for you to score.
I know Corbin wants Hayward to score more, but I'm not sure if he's talked to Hayward about that. There are a few other people that he needs to have a conversation with also, but he's too overwhelmed right now to go there. I also know the rookie ref thing bothers Corbin and he is concerned about it at the end of games.
The match-up thing was bogus, However, on this road trip, Corbin might not have a choice.
