“Over the last five or six games, we’ve mixed up our [defensive] coverages a little bit. I think that’s important,” head coach Jay Triano said Monday after the Raptors’ first practice following a two-game trip to England. “I don’t think it’s good for a guy like Ed Davis to go into his second year saying, ‘This is how I guard the screen-roll. This is the only way I know how to do it.’ I think our goal is to challenge our young players under different learning situations and coverages and put them in different situations on the floor and on the offensive end as well and see what they can do.”
To break down some of the coach’s jargon: The Raptors are going to try some new things over the season’s last 19 games. There will be different offensive plays run, different lineups used, different defensive schemes implemented. All of that will be done in the name of long-term growth. It is possible that will lead to short-term headaches, though. It takes longer for young players to adjust to change than it does for veterans.
Sounds like they are going to use the rest of the season as an extended training camp. Practicing new sets.
Good for them. It's the way to go. More development........& more losses....
