Everyone needs to adjust their expectations because unless Kanter or the other Euro center somehow slip to us, we're going to need to address it through FA.
Hawes isnt going to blow anyone's socks off but he has already demonstrated an ability to be a servicable starter in Sac with about 11-12 pts 7-8 rebounds and 1-2 blocks. His numbers are underwhelimg in Philly because although they start him every game, they play small ball and he only sees 20 mins per night.
If he would cost more than $4-5mil per year, I wouldnt want any part of him. But If he can be had in the right price range, thats not bad at all for a 7'1 250 lb big man drafted int he top 10 who is still only 22 yo.
It might be a moot point because some team may overpay for him. If you look around the league right now, teams like NY (starting Turiaf), MIA (Dampier), HOU (Hayes) would all love to have Hawes. But we arent better off at the 5 spot overselves with only Kwame who we may lose to a higher bidder in FA.
If we roll the dice on Oden (which is a gamble I would be unwilling to take) and he goes down again, we'd then have he and Diop collectively eating up $10-14 mil a year with nothing to show for it.
