Lakers to sign 6'5" guard Trey Johnson

Post#1 » by dockingsched » Tue Apr 12, 2011 9:16 pm

http://lakers.ocregister.com/2011/04/12 ... son/52395/

The Lakers are planning to sign free-agent guard Trey Johnson for backcourt depth in light of Steve Blake’s indefinite absence with the chicken pox.

Johnson, 26, was with the Lakers in training camp and averaged 25.5 points, 4.5 assists and 4.2 rebounds for the Bakersfield Jam of the NBA Development League this season. Johnson is 6-foot-5 and more of an off guard but does have ball-handling skills. He shot 32.2 percent on 3-pointers for Bakersfield yet is considered a good shooter from long range.

The Lakers could use Kobe Bryant, Shannon Brown or Lamar Odom as stopgaps at lead guard behind starter Derek Fisher while Blake is out. Luke Walton would also be in line for an increased role, even if small forward Matt Barnes’ balky right knee is OK.

i like those averages, haha. don't remember anything about him, but he did play in 7 games for the raptors this yr.

I saw him quite a bit and to me he's a more athletic Carlos Arroyo.. that means not really a three-point threat. He has good size and is an average defender... i dont think he plays a meaningful minute for the lakers.

Is he playoff eligible, or is this just for the last 2 games?

he's eligible apparently....although i did thing you hasd to be signed sometime in march....or maybe there's an exception since the league knows we don't have a useful guard on the bench.....now the question is.....does he take sb's mins?.....i mean ater all, i dont think anyone with nba potential could be much worst.....

you have to be cut by march, not signed. eddy curry would have been eligible too if he signed with the heat.

and i don't think he gets any minutes at all, much less shannon's minutes. guy was brought in for emergency use since blake is down.

How this guy isn't in the league versus a few other SGs is really something to behold.

I was impressed with what I saw.

On offense, he had a couple of nice leaners and did a good job of attacking the basket. He seems to have solid ball-handling skills and knows how to move off the ball as well. He doesn't over dribble and he plays hard, which you'd expect since this is his big chance.

On defense, he always seemed aware of where his man was, boxed out properly, and knew when to help out.

I didn't see anything wrong with his game, and I'd play him over Brown once Blake gets back without even needing to see much more of him. He's already shown me that he's a better basketball player than Brown in less than 15 minutes.
