JJ contract does it still look so bad?

Hawks had to pay Joe if they wanted to be a player in the post season.

The contracts that hurt them were/are Bibby, Marvin and Zaza. They over paid for all of them more so than Joe. Those three contracts add up to a max contract - for what!


Flip Murray was as effecticve maybe more than Bibby. Mo Evans was as effective as Marvin - he had a smaller skill set but he was smarter and consistent. Who started against the Magic? Twin not Zaza. To get away from Bibby they gave away Jordan Crawford. That hurts.

Agains signing Bibby, Marvin, and Zaza was the mistake each has proven to be worth about 40% of their salaries.
If you look at all the player who have recieved max contracts in the last five years Joe is better than a lot of them. People forget about the Ray allens, JO's, Vinces, Kirlenko's, Mcgradys etc.

This takes the cake. The only argument you can make is that he should have gotten 20 million less, but other than, who else would you have paid? I think Horford can be mention with those guys above as being "mistakes". He recently just got 12 million dollars a year, while guys like David West, Paul Milsap, Scola, Lamar Odom, Perkins and even the head case Andray Blatche get paid less. LMA is way better IMO and he will be making only 4 million more than Horford. Smith ain't no 11-13 million dollar man, but we were forced to accept that. Management did the right thing in trying to keep Joe. They messed up with the extension they gave to others.

The post above makes no sense. The Hawks got a bargain with Smith and Horford and wildly overpaid for Joe. The Hawks got Horford for 20 million less than David Lee and Rudy gay on that same market(depsite him having a huge QO the next year)and got Smith for less money than Emeka Okafor,Luol Deng,and Iguodala the same year despite him being the best of that bunch. If Brand didnt shock everyone by leaving the Clippers(after they signed Baron)then the Hawks probably would have been competing with a 70 million dollar offer from Philly! Both of these were huge wins by the Hawks in negotiations.

The Hawks gave Joe the biggest contract of the summer in what was probably the best year for free agents in the history of professional basketball. One year and 30+ million more than any other team could have offered w/o a sign and trade. Giving Bibby 3 guaranteed years was stupid as well when players like Andre Miller and Ramon Sessions got less money on the same market.

Al Horford has a better Defense per 100 possessions and Offensive per 100 possessions. Lamarcus Bottom line on LMA? Aldridge gives up more points than he scores. fail. Only Perkins is in the post season fail.
Millsap is great but Smith has played SF, PF, and Center in 7 games. we're winning cut it out!

I do see problems going forward as soon as next series but the onus is on ownership to improve, the team.

A Bargain with Smith? Yes. Bargain with Horford? Somewhat yeah. Could we have had him cheaper? I think so. At the most we should have gave him 5/50. David Lee obviously got overpaid(Should have got something similar to Al got) and Rudy Gay is a young top-5 SF. Maybe he should have gotten a little less, but he is a great scorer, can hit the 3, an above average rebounder, a good defender and is only 24. Deng has a similar deal to Josh and should have gotten lesser, but a year longer. Philly was looking for a veteran obviously, so Josh wouldn't have gotten an offer that big.

Horford's AS appearances got him that contract. In a conference that didn't have a healthy enough #2 Center or one on a winning team, Horford gets selected with 14/9 stats just because he played Center for a winning team. LMA had 22/9 with 1.2 blocks this year and is making just a few extra millions and he plays against a lot of centers. Who do you think would have offered Al a bigger deal than what he got on those numbers? We won the negotiations, but could have faired better.

zaza's contract really isnt that bad. i would give to him again if i had the chance of a redo, the same cant be said for marvin,bibby, or joe.

NO made the playoffs, but West was hurt during the series. Can argue he would have made a difference. Odom, plays for the Lakers. Milsaps had a playoff team before the Sloan/Deron fiasco. Rockets could have made the playoffs in the East. I never said I wanted Milsaps over Smith.

I think most teams would be glad to trade 4 those 2 contracts given the ability to play multiple positions and produce wins at a younger age.

They are still on acceptable deals, but the difference in signing 2-3 million dollars cheaper is very significant. If Al signs a 5/50 deal, we can easily have 2 million more in flexibility. If we re-sign Marv and Zaza for cheaper deals, we can have that money. Unfortunately, half the roster is overpaid. We had no other choice, but match Memphis offer for Josh, but he expires soon. Would really be nice if he signs like a 9 or 10 mill a year deal. Hopefully he thinks about the situation the Hawks finances are in.
