Chocolate City Smithsonian Institute exhibition? You don't say ...

Smithsonian acquires Parliament-Funkadelic Mothership

http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle ... story.html

The funkiest UFO in the galaxy is about to land in Chocolate City.

The Mothership — the iconic stage prop made famous by legendary funk collective Parliament-Funkadelic — has been acquired by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture where it will help anchor a permanent music exhibition when the museum opens its doors in 2015.

The Mothership is now officially a cultural icon of African American history and culture. You know you're old when you've gone mainstream.

Today was a day that made me appreciate working at NIH.
Got to see Eric Lander give a talk. I will post a link to
the video archive later. Not sure it's available yet.

Nice to bike to work today too!

We had 17 toddlers/preschoolers at our home tonight for my daughter's birthday (4).

Just found out that the Nationals allow 50% off on any seat in the stadium if you show a college ID at the ticket office.

I wish the Wizards would do something like this. The student night they hold on Wed and Friday games is so lame. You always get seated in crappy areas of Verizon Center.

I think Nationals Park is the best sporting experience in the DC area right now. I love it. Metro convenient, good food, good crowd, cheap.

On a side note: what is with the Shake Shack hype? On menu, it seems like your common burger/shake joint.

Shake Shack is pretty amazing man. I think I'd rate it slightly above Five Guys if only because there's less grease. I'd give it a go, it wouldn't hurt.

Sorry Pine about all the toddlers but I'm sure it was fun!

Hahaha why you need a professional like me to take care of that for you. Just think I deal with that everyday I work ;) (at points I've been in charge of close to 100 of them at one time ;))

http://www.parentcentral.ca/parent/babi ... der-secret

parents decide to keep their kid's gender a secret. already have 2 other kids, both boys, age 5 and 2. the 5 year old loves girly things (long hair, pink clothes, painted fingernails...) but hates being called a girl. had the mom write a note to the nature center summer camp where he goes to telling them that he is in fact a boy.

kids names are Jazz, Koi, and the newborn gender-neutral infant Storm.

i'm... not supportive of this.

True or False: prime Gilbert Arenas was a better player than Derrick Rose was this season.

I've got to go with prime Gil.

False. Rose is on par with Gilbert Arenas on offense (Gilbert was a more lethal scorer but also more prone to streaky play / Rose is less lethal but much more consistent) but where the comparison weighs heavily in Roses' favor is defense. Derrick plays it and plays it well. Gilbert didn't.

If it produces phrases like "the newborn gender-neutral infant Storm," I'm 100% in favor. Someone's got to conduct such experiments.

Gilbert would have been a good defender if Eddie Jordan and Grunfeld would have held him accountable for it.

The inmates ran the asylum here during our playoff years. Gilbert was the type of player who needed veteran guidance: he only got it for offense.

Possibly. But one player gave me something concrete to go on while with Gilbert, we can only speak in hypotheticals. I agree that he had all the physical tools to be a good defender. He also had a tremendous work ethic, but Rose actually put both to use.

I'm a huge gilbert arenas homer myself, but not even close. Only thing that Arenas did better than Rose did this year is shoot and well I'm sorry Rose did EVERYTHING else better. Defense, running the offense, even finishing around the rim..... Rose was an MVP this season and I get tired of people saying it was a weak MVP season. Rose would of beat out Nash in 2 of 3 of his MVP seasons IMO.

Hard to call it a weak MVP season when you have great performances from LeBron, Dwight and Durant.

Defense - yes Rose has the advantage but it's not like Rose is an above average defender.

Finishing at the rim - without looking at any data I would say Gilbert was as good as Rose is at finishing at the rim. Gilbert Arenas was incredible at getting to the rim.

Running the offense - Gilbert was a very good passer. I would say Gilbert has an advantage here.

So, to me, there is one mild advantage for Rose (defense) one mild advantage for Gilbert (passing) and one substantial advantage for Gilbert (shooting). That's why I've got to go with Gil.

I guess the difference here is that while you believe Rose to be an average defender, I consider him well above-average. Not quite to the point of All-NBA Defensive honors but enough to make that "mild advantage" you give Rose over Gilbert a "decisive advantage". And considering defense is half the game, the advantage becomes that much more crucial in deciding players.

I think Rose is a great player, but he should not have won MVP this year. The MVP was Lebron or Dwight. Rose is a similar MVP to Nash -- good story; little guy who does amazing things. But, good as he was, Lebron and Dwight are better, and more valuable. Rose for MVP became a meme pretty early, and the media voted for the story they wanted to tell, not for the best player.

As for Arenas vs. Rose -- I'd take prime Arenas on the offensive end, and Rose on defense. Rose's edge on defense is bigger than Gil's edge on offense, so overall, Rose is the better player. Prime Gil was an amazing offensive weapon, though.

the sad thing about gil was that he had the potential to get even better. he had that unstoppable first step, he had great finishing ability, he had unlimited range but there was no in-between game. add in the rudiments of a post game, and a reliable midrange game and he would have won 2-3 scoring titles on some spectacular %'s.
