Indy talking trade with NYK ?

Post#1 » by Grang33r » Wed Jun 15, 2011 11:18 pm

Newsday reported in early June that #Knicks would look into moving up if possible. Rumors now surfacing about talks w/ IND (15), others.

What's odd is they only pick 2 slots behind us. Is there anyone on their roster that is realistically worth the 15th pick?

There are a million rumors when talking about the Knicks and the New York media. I don't see anything we would need from them. Maybe Douglas? I definitely wouldn't trade 15 for him. Maybe 15 and Rush for 17 and Douglas? I'd rather hold onto 15 and take Brooks, because I could see NY targeting him too.

Early June? Even if it was a rumor it's probably dead now. Walsh is gone. Bird said today he has it down to 3 guys he wants to pick.

It could be just a swap of picks, and then they send us cash, a second round pick, or some lesser player. Who knows...

Would you give up the #15 for Landry Fields? Other than that, I could see Toney Douglas for AJ Price and a swap from #15 to #17. That's really about it. They have Carmelo, Amare, Turiaf, Balkman, Douglas, Bill Walker, and Fields under contract. That's about it. Balkman is a negative as he's got 2 more guaranteed years. Walker just isn't necessary right now. Turiaf is expiring and a big man, but $4.5 million. Carmelo and Amare just aren't part of a deal. That leaves Douglas and Fields that are out there. Of the two, Fields would hold more value, but I would assume they wouldn't use Landry just to move up 2 spots. They might give him up for the #15 outright (though I'm not sure I'd do it, unless we had something else lined up to move Granger for a top pick and useful player pre-arranged).

Considering that they want Fredette at any and all costs it seems. If the right side package is available a swap of picks is possible. Question is will Fredette be there when the Pacers pick?

This from http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=AqyC7bhUYBSGLjV_Z4LqUhu8vLYF?slug=ycn-8648301.

Looks like Indy could be trying to move to 4? I'm sure Larry is doing his due dilligence on every possibility, but this seems to suggest they're a little more unsettled on what to do than they are saying publicly, which is unsurprising.

Who would Indy target at 4 though? Kanter as a PF? Valanciunas? Its interesting.

4 Cleveland Cavaliers
Jonas Valanciunas, C
19 years old; 6'11"; 240 lbs
Lietuvos Rytas (Lithuania)

Valanciunas is currently training with the Lithuanian under-19 national team in its preparations for the World Championships in Riga, Latvia, which starts at the end of June. That didn’t stop Valanciunas from making an appearance at the adidas EuroCamp in Italy, where he told us he interviewed with seven separate NBA teams.

Most franchises picking in the top-10 feel that Valanciunas is the top player on Cleveland’s draft board at this pick.

Cleveland could make a deal, with teams like New York, Charlotte, Indiana and Houston being active in trying to move up in the draft, but it’s not clear if anything will get done by the time the Cavs are on the clock.

Would anyone NOT do that deal? Fields is a legit player, was basically a top-5 rookie last year. He's a big guard, rebounds very very well for a guard, has good percentages... and most importantly, has really great basketball IQ. There were just so many times when I watched a Knicks game and saw Fields doing stuff that most rookies aren't even vaguely aware of. Basically a heady veteran already.

http://nbaplaybook.com/2011/01/05/quick-hitter-knicks-start-the-game-with-a-bang/

In general, he just seems to be one of those perfect glue guys like a Battier or a Tony Allen. Someone who will be in the league for years and would fit on literally any team.

He's already way better than what we could expect to get with the 15th pick in a weak draft. He would absolutely be our starting SG, and we'd be very pleased with his production.

There is no way any competent GM would ever say, "nah, i'll keep the #15 instead of taking Fields, thanks"

Yeah, this is pretty close to how I feel as well. Definitely right in comparing him to a Shane Battier type player.

However, at that point, if you get Fields for the #15, do you then take offers for Granger? Look for a top pick package and go for someone like a Kanter, Knight, or Kemba? Derrick Williams? Or do you just hold onto all of Granger, George, and Fields and see where you go?

I give up the pick for Fields without thinking. Proven player as opposed to big question marks in this doodie draft.

I'd be surprised if they gave us Douglas just to move up 2 spots but I have no clue where they plan to go with the pick. Douglas played really well last year when I saw him play so I'd take him in a heartbeat.

It's tough to see a NY deal. They don't really have the ability to include future 1sts (even just future 1st picks swaps). Turiaf could be a useful big, but not useful enough to be the pure incentive. Toney Douglas is still recovering from a shoulder surgery, apparently. Bill Walker? No real need, especially if we pick up another wing.

Word from that same source says the Knicks are looking to pick up a 2nd rounder as well, using cash or other means. Maybe #15/Rush/2 2nds for #17/Fields/Balkman? That would certainly be a dream for the Pacers, as Fields should likely be worth the #15 by himself.

In a bad draft, Fields is worth more to the Knicks than just the 15. You better give something good if they are going to give up the one guy that they kept from acquiring Melo.

From what it's looking like (if this is indeed true what I linked above to in my post, and the deal does indeed happen on Draft night), it might be Pick #17+Walker+Cash for Pick #15. But who knows right now. NY has been oddly keeping EVERYTHING close to the best this Year.

There's really no use for Walker in Indy, though. We already have George, Granger, Dahntay, and Rush, with Lance and AJ looking to get a few minutes here and there at the 2. All this, AND we're still likely looking at drafting a SG type player (Brooks possibly) at the #15 (or #17 in this type of deal).

What does Bill Walker do to intrigue us at this point?
