ESPN The Magazine released its ‘The Ultimate Standings’ rankings for 2011 today and the San Antonio Spurs were named the top NBA franchise and the fifth-best professional team out of 122 total teams from the NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB franchises. The Spurs have ranked as the top NBA franchise six times and is the only franchise to have been named the top overall team twice among the four major sports since ESPN introduced its annual survey in 2003. "It is with great pride that we congratulate the San Antonio Spurs for being ranked as ESPN The Magazine's top NBA franchise for the sixth time," said NBA Commissioner David Stern. "San Antonio's commitment to excellence starts with owner Peter Holt, is instilled in every member of the organization, and makes the Spurs a model franchise both on and off the court."

Spurs shopping Parker for a lotto pick. Posted this trade on the trade board:

Spurs trade Parker for SJAX+Diop+Fields+9
Bobcats trade Diop+SJAX+9 for 17+Billups
Knicks trade: Fields+Billups+17 for Parker

Bobcats save 17 million to drop 8 spots. Knicks want to win now. Spurs get lotto pick and SJAX who helps right away.

Can the Spurs take on that kind of long term money?

Well, Parker is signed for 4 more years, so they actually SAVE money in this deal because Diop and SJAX expire 2 years sooner. Say Walker drops to 9 (a possibility according to WOJ):

PG: Hill/Walker
SG: Manu/Anderson
SF: SJAX/Jefferson/Fields
PF: McDyess/Bonner/Blair
C: Duncan/Splitter

I'd try and trade Fields for a bigman, but he's makes so little, that its hard.

Pops would love Fields but i think they would rather a big coming back.

Well, in fairness, we took Mike Pence off their hands. Taking back Mahinmi is the least they can do.

I don't think the Spurs would want to have that much cash tied up in their SF position, mhd. I also think they'd be trading up for a big, not another guard.

I posted in the draft thread that I think they could be after Valanciunas. Duncan has a year left on his deal, so they can wait for him to come over. When he does, they can try to groom another twin towers situation with him and Splitter (assuming one of them can play PF).

If I'm right, they are probably looking at dealing with Cleveland at 4 or Toronto at 5. Both need point guards and IIRC both still have their near-max TPE's from last summer.

Big three way trade Sac-Bucks-Char

Char gets: Maggette #7
Bucks get: Udrih, Jackson, #19
Sacto get: Salmons, #10

Cho works magic on this one. Maggette and Jackson have the same size contract. Jacksons good, but not in their future, Maggette blows, but they take on no salary.

What is Sacramento thinking. Udrih expires in two years and is useful. Salmons blows and is under contract for gulp, 4 more years. All the while droping 3 picks.

Way to make a splash, two good GM's run-out by the Blazer jerk owner.

Former New York Knicks president Dave Checketts is serving as a basketball consultant to new Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores, according to sources close to the situation.

I can't find the D-League thread, but it looks like the Wizards need a new D-League affiliate.

Show's you how desperate teams are for quality bigs. The Blazers have gone this-far with Oden, may as-well toss another $8 mil Oden's way...at-least he'll have extra time for rehab :)

Looks like JJ Hickson to Kings for Omri Casspi and a future first.

One less team that won't be interested in Blatche.

Nice, they've been wanting to dump JJ for a while now, Casspi should get more playing time with the Cavs.

I really like that for Cleveland, although they look like even bigger idiots now for sacrificing a chance to get Amare because they wanted to hold onto Hickson. Be that as it may, Casspi gives them a young wing player to develop. No star potential IMO, but he's still an upgrade IMO and probably a starter.

I think this deal also means that they will be keeping Jamison and that he probably starts at PF for them while Tristan Thompson develops. At least that's what I would do.

How about this for a follow-up: Baron Davis to Charlotte for Diop+Carroll+Najera. Cleveland gets some 2012 salary relief and diffuses a logjam at the PG spot, while Charlotte gives up scraps on the chance that BDiddy can be productive again under Paul Silas.

Verajao/Hollins
Jamison/Thompson
Casspi/Graham
Eyenga/Gibson
Irving/Sessions

Still a lottery team but definitely moving in the right direction.

Cleveland has to move Baron, for sure, LR.

My initial reaction to the Hickson deal is that Sacramento is getting it done. My goodness are they stockpiling young guys with game. Hickson is 22 years old--a full two years younger than Blatche, and months younger than Javale. I would rate Hickson a better rebounder and a slightly better shooter and more athletic player than Andray Blatche. Blatche is bigger, able to play some C, a better passer, and more versatile. I think Andray's a little better right now than Hickson--but not by much.

I love the deal for Cleveland, because they clear playing time for Thompson and also get multiple picks, plus a crowd-pleasing player, Casspi. Omri is what LR says, a wing player to develop, a sixth-man type.

I bet the Cavs end up moving Jamison to SF and starting Thompson ahead of Casspi. You don't burn a #4 pick on a non-starter.
The Wizards shoukd have drafted Derik Queen

I told you so :banghead:

Or maybe Jamison finally returns to the 6th man role, as has been talked about for many years. Provides instant scoring and rebounding while being able to selectively insert to mask his defensive deficiencies.

Does this work?

Hornets trade: Paul, Okafor, and Ariza
Hornets receive: J.Smith, Teague, Iguodala, Speights, Nocioni, and 3 ATL firsts

Sixers trade: Iguodala, Speights, and Nocioni
Sixers receive: Okafor and Hinrich

Hawks trade: J.Smith, Hinrich, Teague, and 2013/2015/2017 firsts
Hawks receive: Paul and Ariza

TRADE ID 5914676

Overall, I think it's a solid package for NOH, but ATL seems to be getting Paul too easily. Still, I think it balances every body out.

FA/Anderson
Smith/Speights
Iggy/Nocioni
FA/Pondexter
Jack/Teague

Okafor/Hawes
Brand/Brackins
Young(?)/Turner
Meeks/Williams
Holiday/Hinrich

Pachulia/FA
Horford/Rolle
Ariza/Williams
Johnson/Sy
Paul/FA
