figured id see most of this board killing our pick... nothing new there... i see a lot of people regurgitating draft site info and popular conjecture about shumpert... and very few guys posting real analysis...

so let me throw in my two cents... ive watched a fair amount of shumpert over the last three years... and listen to this guy... he knows what hes talking about...

He's a lot better shooter than people here seem to believe, he took a TON of bad shots at GT in that offense that really hurt his percentages.

IF this is true, then offensively he'll be the abolute perfect fit for our team. And defensively he'll obviously help. Lets see what happens when he gets into the game.

Our team is nothing but bad shots!

Every once in a while we have a game where we're hitting 3pters (Shumpert's biggest weakness) and those are the ones where he will be hitting his set shots.

I like the pick and I love defense which he brings but I am dreading the moments when Melo is just jacking up shots and Amare is disinterested and we have to find that next offensive option.

The cupboard is bare as far as pure talent on this team. Landry Fields is actually a much better offensive player than Shumpert, and he's only lacking more control of his handle.

Let's not knock or overhype Shumpert too much! He's a good pick but a very up/down player.

I agree with this in general, but Singleton would be a difficult player to develop since he plays the same 2 positions that we are set at. It would be tough to raise his value playing behind Amare and Melo, and (just like how you mentioned with Shumpert) if he can't consistently hit the three then he won't get much playing time at all anyway. I think the other issue is that not everyone necessarily felt he was the BPA -- here's the quote we got "Some in the organization felt Singleton was the best player available".

Now, there probably is something to be said for the idea of taking a guy with a higher perceived value at the time on draft night (perhaps Singleton or Brooks) and then essentially trading down for the guy you think is the better fit (Shumpert). This would get you the most value for the pick. We don't know if the Knicks considered this at all, but it doesn't seem like they did.

And with one fell swoop, a man's draft accumen is crushed like Sasha Grey

i already acknowledged the fields pick...but even then, the dude averaged 2 ppgs in the POs...both are still better of the bench players, dont have high value (couldnt help NY move up in the weak draft), and were exposed big time against BOS in the POs...i'll stand behind any comment i made regarding the rautins, gallo, douglas and picks,...and acknowledge I was wrong on fields, though Im not high on him as others

its funny you leave out the hill pick comments, wonder why

In theory, sure. But what does that really mean in this case, especially since it sounds like the house was divided on this issue. If we're talking early in the draft and there's a wide gulf between two players than sure but it sounds like Shumpert impressed enough so that the gulf is not so wide.

Further, on a team that's playing for something THIS YEAR that development isn't gong to happen with Amare and Melo here and especially when the coach says that he wants one guy. Shumpert's a guy that D' will actually play because he's a rebounding guard with good transition game and spot up shooting ability. And in that regard we have the opportunity to build up Shumpert's asset value more than Singleton's as well.

you better pray he can hit 3's early because otherwise mike will bench him for months. and f*ck what mike wants anyway, he's on his last year here. why should he have any input, that's a joke.

This post is full of stupid. 1, Mike won't just bench the kid if he's cold from three, if he's playing stupid and hurting the team then he'll go back to the bench for polishing til he's ready, a la Mozzie and AR, but if he's out there trying hard and not hurting the team he'll play just like Landry Fields played despite not being a good 3 point shooter, or how Chandler played a lot despite not being a good 3 point shooter.

2, Mike D'Antoni is the coach of this team, if you're not going to pick players your coach can use you should fire him, but alas Mike is the best coach we can get so he's not going to be fired so he's our coach. Maybe his contract doesn't get extended but short of Phil Jackson coming back to the NBA after a year of there aren't many coaches better than Mike D who'll be available.

again the phrase that sums up shumperts offensive game is 'poor volume player'... but that isnt the same as saying hes a bad offensive player... the guy took 14 shots a game last year... hes going to see maybe half that many opportunities playing with melo amare and billups...

i havent seen the kid struggle hitting wide open shots... or pushing the ball and finishing in transition... what i have seen him struggle with is shooting off the dribble... and creating for himself... and with the personnel on this team currently... i think we need the type of things he does well to add to offensive arsenal... and wont really ask him to do the things he cant... at least offensively... dont think many people are griping about the kids defense...

According to multiple sources, Walsh took a poll of the Knicks' war room, of all the scouts and basketball staff, and there was a split between Shumpert and Singleton. Walsh then turned to Mike D'Antoni, who said he wanted Shumpert. That's when Walsh declared, "Shumpert is the pick" and the selection was submitted.

anybody else kind of happy this is walsh's last pick for us.

Same level of players but Shumpert is the better fit for us.

They really were not sold on Marshon Brooks, eh?

THAT'S the guy I wonder about as well. We shall see.

i think he had to have been up there; the issue was singleton, projected in the lottery, dropping.

People wanted defense on this team so we draft the best perimeter defender in the draft. And you guys are still mad.

Since everyone is oozing over his potential, I can see him turning out into a bigger Russy Westbrook, but that is his absolute max potential. Look, if you can play solid defense in the NBA, you will get burn. At worst, he will give you stellar D, and some athleticism on the court.

What else does Roger Mason provide besides shooting 3's?

Does Toney Douglas get benched when he's cold?

We were small last year...Shawne Williams was one of our only post defenders.
What do I care...it's rigged anyway
