I agree with this 100% its like a floater in the lane. What I cant get passed is there is a clear distinction of when you can take those steps and when you cannot to me is blurred. Theres so many different ways to call travel. For instance if I receive a pass, and my pivot lifts before the ball hits the ground its traveling. The pivot foot doesnt even have to come back down. Here's the problem im having. The play below is excuted to perfection per the rule.

He does his spin move, jumps, and before he lands per the rule he has to either shoot or pass. he does that in that video.

In the OP's video he does all those things but before he shoots or passes he steps with the right foot. Clearly those are two different plays. Im not sure Im ready to say, well his pivot never came back down so it was ok. Thats kinda throwing everything under one big umbrella. Im not even arguing the pivot coming off the ground, Im arguing that after the pivot comes off the ground, and he takes the other step.....whats the meaning of that step. I think some people are saying well thats 1 of the 2 steps he gets like when he's going for a layup. Im not sure the allowed 2 step layup is applied here. Just like you cant catch a pass, take two steps then dribble. But maybe it is as simple as his pivot never came back down so he can do whatever the hell he wants.

Pretty sure he does the exact same move here as in the OP's vid. Same footwork, at least.

Because the refs are worse?

Yes, because it LOOKS like a travel.

Basketball is a game of appearing to comply with the rules. If the referee thinks you made a violation because he saw an overt action, legal or not, it will be called and arguing it would be futile. Same goes for fouls.

Obviously it is a travel. He lifted up his pivot foot.

If "lifting your pivot foot" is a travel, every pull-up jumper is a travel.

It's a travel, Kobe lifted up his pivot foot and came back down before he shot the ball.

It doesn't matter if he came back down with his off foot and not his pivot foot.

He lifted up his pivot foot and did not shoot or pass...that's an up and down violation.

Every 2 step layups would be travels if they established pivoting.

Every 2 step layups, the player does not even pivot.

I think it was assumed that he meant to say "he lifted his pivot foot and took another step"

Of course, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.

People always call a travel on me for this move, and I always get into a heated argument over it.

Yep, same here. Gotta avoid it now, just not worth getting into an argument over. There needs to be some nationwide clarification on this lol, because right now it's obviously far from common knowledge that this move isn't a travel.

32 pages and still going on ... here is an exert from FIBA, hope it helps :

F.I.B.A. Handbook: Rules,Cases, Mechanics ... the FIBA Rulebook.

Art. 39 Section C. Progressing With The Ball

1. After having established a pivot foot:
a. On a pass or try for a field goal, the pivot foot may be LIFTED but may NOT be returned to the floor before the ball is released from the hand(s).
b. To start a dribble, the pivot foot may NOT be lifted BEFORE the ball is released from the hands.

An infraction of this Article is a violation

No travel by all rules posted in this thread. Probably why he has done it countless times with no travel called.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't this the same move? Establish left foot as pivot, lift it, jump off right, release ball?

Man, I'd like to see the main argument of both sides here... but 32 pages to find the good posts seems like a pain in the ass.

It's almost as if some people post without reading any of the 10 pages explaining the rule.

This thread is absolutely frustrating. It seems like there's been a consensus that the move is legit and not a travel multiple times only to have some guy come in who hasn't read the thread saying, "LOLZ clearly a travel he switched pivot foot!" or something (Please Use More Appropriate Word) like that.

FFS people read the damned thread.

Why is a FIBA video being used? I'm pretty sure the traveling rules aren't exactly the same.

FIBA is terrible...the third step after picking up your dribble is considered acceptable, lol.
