Quinn makes good on losing Bears bet
KENOSHA—
— Though it pained him greatly, Gov. Pat Quinn headed across the state line Tuesday to make good on a bet.
Wearing a Packers jersey, Illinois' governor stocked food pantry shelves with dried fruit, stuffing, chicken broth and the ever-appropriate macaroni and cheese. The food was donated by Walgreens, Kraft Foods and other Illinois companies, all to help Quinn pay off his friendly-but-losing wager that the Bears would beat the Green Bay Packers in January's NFC Championship game.
"I've been a Bears fan all my life, and this is not easy," Quinn said during his appearance at the Shalom Center Food Pantry. "I've never worn a Packers jersey and I hope I never have to wear one again."
The governor sported a No. 75 Packers jersey, the number worn by offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga, who was born in Illinois. To make his allegiance clear, Quinn layered it over a Gale Sayers jersey, joking that the former Bear and Hall of Fame member was "closer to my heart."
Quinn made the wager seven months ago with Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, a Republican. But it took the Chicago Democrat a while to pay up, with Quinn acknowledging he stayed away in part because of unrest over labor issues in Wisconsin.
"I look forward to having him back when the Green Bay Packers repeat as Super Bowl champions," Walker said in a statement.
