Well to be fair the diet soda does allow more calories. But as you mentioned there are other issues such as cravings. In a vacuum, the diet soda is better for weight loss, but if you develop cravings for sugar and eat a candy bar to make up for it then you aren't any better off and potentially worse off.

I just think it's generally safer to avoid soda of any kind. These companies do not have your health in mind and in fact, there are several companies that benefit from the poor health of the masses. There is a very questionable link to subsidies for foods that result in weight gain and poor health. You have to read the labels.

There are several beverage options, but best is still water. Gatorade G2 isn't bad for the reduction of sugar, Propel and Vitamin Water and the sort. Also Tropicana and other juicers have reduced sugar options. I drink quite a bit of the calcium enriched Trop 50, which has half the sugar and calories.

I'm also semi-literate so that's three strikes for your Tines theory.

Ground turkey burgers are a good substitute for ground beef burgers, imo. They're not too bad.

Lyle McDonald sums up calories in vs calories out better than I did:

Once again, my point is that if calories are being strictly controlled, the source doesn’t appear to make a humongous difference in terms of body composition changes. As well, once you get protein intake to proper levels, fooling around with carbohydate and fat ratios (within the context of identical caloric intakes) don’t seem to make a huge amount of difference either. The bottom line still comes down to calories in versus calories out; it’s simply that it may be easier to affect calories in (food intake) or calories out (through activity) with different macronutrient breakdowns.

As well, the source of calories can affect other aspects of physiology beyond body composition. Health, energy levels, hunger/appetite and all the rest interact here. So while a calorie controlled diet of jelly beans, butter and protein powder might very well work to lose weight/fat, it probably wouldn’t be as healthy compared to a diet of low GI carbohydrates, healthier oils and lean protein sources.

Understand me here? Issues such as hunger control, long-term adherence, individual variance, athletic performance, and a few others all go into the determination of what food might or might not be a better choice under a given set of circumstances. So while a calorie might be more or less a calorie under somewhat artificial conditions (where calories are or can be strictly controlled), it’s a little more complex than that in the real world. Other issues interact. The next few chapters will adress those other issues.

Big fan of salmon and seafoods for protein.

I am a really skinny person. I walked by Jennings one day going into a Mexican restaurant and my co-workers didn't believe it was him because he is actually skinnier than I am.

It shocks me he is able to stay as healthy as he does in the NBA. I get banged up pretty bad playing pick up ball once every week or two. I know he's a professional athlete, but when you are that skinny getting banged around by guys that are almost twice your size, that has to take its toll on you.

He needs to bulk up.... so do I. :D

The NBA is full of super skinny guys. Guys with normal athletic height/weight ratios look like bodybuilders on an NBA court.

Or look at a guy like Tiny Gallon, who was enormously fat by NBA standards, but lighter and taller than most O-linemen.

There are some fairly ripped dudes in the NBA. Obviously it takes a different kind of body to compete in the different sports.

Yeah it's no surprise he fades left on all of his contested layups. I know when I play against a team full of Maori's I feel damn sore the next day.
Assuming I actually get back to proper training I'm looking to box at 154. I've gotten down to 158 before and maintained my strength so I think I can do it.

So after my big spring/early summer drop from about 220 to 189, I've plateaued at 292. I'm doing Al's Run this morning, resting tomorrow, and then committing to getting back on the horse on Monday.

Here's a different type of push-up to try. It's pretty easy if you can knock out 25-30 regular push-ups.
