Who's the best for Packer news?

Post#1 » by Bucksfans1and2 » Thu Dec 15, 2011 4:25 am

There are a whole bunch of great writers for the Packers, who do you guys like the best.

Also, I'm looking for opinions on Jason Wilde?

McGinn is the best. The others at the JS are good too, Dunne, Nickel, Silverstein. Wilde used to be good.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Wilde's great if you want to get the inside perspective on the life of a two year old and her annoying douche bag father.

To break it down a little bit, McGinn is very good with analysis. Very good. He's not out there tweeting practice updates. That's what Dunne and Silverstein do, mostly Dunne. Nickel has been relugated to doing mostly features. She does them well, I wish they'd give her more responsibility.

Wilde appears (and of course he would dispute this) to consider himself more of a "personality" than a "reporter". He did good work in Madison. Now if you read his articles on the ESPN Milwaukee website you won't find anything new that hasn't been covered elsewhere. His claim to fame is getting to interview Rodgers every Tuesday.

Is JS's coverage > GBPress-Gazette?

I think not

I'd say yes. GBPG has some good writers. Dougherty, Demovsky and Vandermause are good. Better than JS? I would't say that and I don't like much about the JS.

I brought this up in another thread, where dunne had reported that hawk was starting the raider game. I just don't find either dunne or silverstein to be any good and keep finding myself going to GBPG for my packer news.

I've heard mcginn is great and I don't doubt that he is, but i'm not paying for packer plus.

IMHO GBPG has been killing js since bedard left or i'm holding dunne and silverstsien to bedard's standard.

Note I said better coverage. GBPG has more articles, updates & details.

As for better writing, stories & interviews maybe McGinn? I'm not anti-JS. I devour both.

so maybe JS has more insightful opinion but GBPG = more data. Just give me the facts & I'll form my own opinion.

If your willing to pay more insightful, but I think GBPG has better insight then the two guys over at js IMHO

For me personally, GBPG is better than JS. I'm unwilling to pay extra for the Packers coverage with JS so I really can't say whether it would be better than the PG with that included or not.

As for Wilde, I agree with whoever said that he's more of a personality. I listen to Green and Gold Today occasionally on 540am when I'm driving and enjoy it but it definitely isn't any sort of hard hitting news. One thing that I do like about Wilde is that if you follow him on Twitter he basically retweets everything so for someone like me who doesn't follow a lot of people, I see a lot of things I might miss out on otherwise.

I'd have to go GBPG over JS. I don't know if it's just the amount of access they have by being in area. I actually like Dougherty's analysis quite a bit.

Edit: And yes Wilde has become unbearable. He's like the Kardashian of Packers reporters. Nobodies really sure why anybody pays attention to him.

Awesome. I was trying to figure out where my fan club was holding its online meetings. Looks like I found it.

Love that I was a Rockstar on this board once upon a time: viewtopic.php?f=161&t=837394

Then, I started getting mixed reviews and even shared my thoughts on some of the comments:

I'll let you guys go back to doing your thing. Enjoy the rest of the Packers season and the run to 19-0.

For the record, the two guys I respect most on the beat are Tom Silverstein and Rob Demovsky. I highly recommend reading both of them religiously. Pete Dougherty and Bob McGinn are obviously extremely smart, football-minded Xs and Os guys. Tyler Dunne and Lori Nickel do incredible feature work. And while not many folks read him because a lot of his stuff is behind a pay wall, Packer Report's Bill Huber does a really good job, too.

To be fair your writing was pretty different 3 years ago. It's a lot of puff pieces and parenting tips nowadays, and I know that's bound to happen when you've been that close with these players for so long but you can't get upset with us for being honest. We miss old Wilde.

Appreciate the feedback. I keep the parenting tips off the Packers page, though:

Take care.

I don't have any big issues with Wilde as some here seem to, outside of his at times excessive need to inform listeners on various podcats about his family life.

That said, i never read the articles he writes given i feel that i get enough Packers news via JSonline where i get Insider each year from my godmother as a Christmas gift and also i read Gazette sometimes.

I do though pretty much daily listen to Wilde's podcasts on the D-List and Homer, which i enjoy listening to for the most part. His weekly interviews with Rodgers i think are very well done, the two seem to have a good rapport together.

As for the Green and Gold Today show, i'd love to listen more often to it, but Bill Johnson is so absolutely dreadful as the co-host that i just can't listen. I've tried to listen multiple times, but nearly without fail, Bill will start babbling out his inane commentary and i just have to turn it off. It's like 540 came up with a great idea and hired Wilde to do an hour long Packers show each day, but then went to a random bar in Cudahy, pulled a drunk named Bill off a bar stool, and chose to make him co-host with Wilde of their Green and Gold show.
