Atlanta may do it because Horford is injured now, and getting a defensive big to pair with Josh Smith would increase his touches and productivity and also get a chance to add some quality role player in the draft...ideally it would balance out both front courts, with Horford being able to get a majority of the touches in Cleveland with Thompson up front doing the dirty work as well. Also, with Horford likely being out the rest of the year, it would effectively give us a center rotation of Erden/Hollins, great for another high pick. It's gonna be tough otherwise to find a big man to pair with TT that can shoot the ball and spread the floor.
this is real bad for atlanta
first and foremost, horford is their best player. not only that, but they are significantly worse post-trade and really not going anywhere (not that they are now, but w/e). they don't need a lottery pick. they need a legit center allowing them to move horford and smith to their natural positions. waiting on a lottery pick (not even a 2012 lottery pick!) is something they just can't afford to do.

is not a huge upgrade from Varejao. The only big upgrade would be Horford's salary which is due to make a big bump up soon. Horford is a PF playing out of position and he's injuried.
homer goggles are sweet, huh?
