I was only 8 when the Heat played their first season... But already a basketball junkie. My old name used to be HeatFanSince88, but lost that password a long time go so just changed to "87" since technically that was when they were made, I guess. I was more casual fan until the 1991-92 season when Steve Smith became without a doubt my favorite player and the number always would wear. I'll always luv that 91-92 team so much. Grant Long was our early version of Haslem, Steve Smith, Glen Rice, Bimbo Coles, the "Spin Doctor" Siekely, Kevin Edwards, Alan Ogg, Askins, Burton! etc. I'll never forget Steve Smith coming out game 3 at the old Miami Arena all fired up during intros against the NBA champion Bulls! I'll never forgot being so close to that awesome first playoff win! I'll never forget Jordan going off for 55! Lol, Man, I remember as a kid I would take regular season losses SO HARD. I mean.. Wake up in the middle of the night after a close loss.. Tossing and turning, replaying plays in my head. Sh6t.. I think I still do that at 31! Lol! It's amazing, as I type this, watching the Heat play the Bucks in my office, most of my Heat memorabilia on the wall and desk is from that era.
I was so hyped before the 92-93 season.. Harold Miner fell into our laps at 12, picked up a champion tested John Sally. I thought we were on our way! I remember we struggled, Smith was hurt most of the season, Sally disappointed and we didn't take that next step. 93-94... Man we were SO close to that huge upset vs the Hawks. I'll never forget GMoneys tip in game winner game 1 in ATL, but we blew 2-1 lead.. Wasn't meant to be. That era came to end.. My two favorite Heat players of all time were traded for Kevin Willis and I was devastated! We traded Siekely for Billy Owens.. Man I DID NOT like that team of Willis, Owens etc.
Thank the basketball Gods in the summer of 1995 Mickey Arison became majority owner and landed us the great Pat Riley..and the rest as they say, is history!
