Source: J.R. Smith weighing options

Free agent swingman J.R. Smith currently lists the New York Knicks, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Orlando Magic, Chicago Bulls and Indiana Pacers as teams he is considering on his Twitter page.

However, the Knicks and Clippers appear to be the frontrunners, according to the source with knowledge of the talks.

Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said Wednesday that he has spoken to Smith recently and that the conversation went "very, very well."

Clippers point guard Chris Paul has been actively recruiting Smith, whom he played with on the Hornets for two seasons.

"I think our chances are very high," Paul told ESPN.com's Marc Stein earlier this week. "Who knows J.R. better than me?

"Also he knows he'll have the opportunity to play here," Paul said. "He can only make us better."

Paul believes the presence of three of Smith's former teammates on the Clippers' roster and the minutes and shots opened up by the season-ending Achilles injury suffered by Chauncey Billups will be strong lures.

Paul -- referring to Kenyon Martin and Billups, both of whom played with Smith in Denver -- told Stein he attributes his optimism to "my relationship with J.R., Kenyon's relationship with him and Chauncey's relationship with him."

Report: J.R. Smith down to Knicks, Clippers

Post#64 » by kylem4711 » Thu Feb 16, 2012 3:34 pm

Smith was known to be considering both teams, and these are the two clubs that have been mentioned most prominently in connection to Smith. The report says that the Knicks remain the "presumptive favorites" because of the salary the team can offer, but the Clippers are attempting to entice him with the chance at winning a championship ring. The report states that the process "could drag out a bit," and that a player option for next season could be important in Smith making a decision.

I wouldn't be mad at him if he chooses the Knicks. They too have something good going on.

In other news, Marc Spears of yahoo also reports that...
Former NBA guard Jermaine Taylor to workout for Clippers on Friday, source said.

For those who may not remember Jermaine Taylor peep the script

@Alex Kennedy

It sounds like J.R. Smith will sign with the Knicks. The two sides have been in contact and are finalizing a deal. @FisolaNYDN had it first.

Knicks Close To Deal With J.R. Smith
Feb 16, 2012 12:51 PM EST

The Knicks are close to agreement on a deal with J.R. Smith.

New York will need to cut a player to make room for Smith.

Smith has also been considering the Clippers.

J.R. Smith is just going to take away shots from Lin, Melo, and Amare. Its stupid for the Knicks to get him especially with Shumpert and Fields.
If the Clippers win the championship next year I'm getting banned from RealGM

I can't fault him for taking the money.

He, like every other professional athlete, is just one serious injury away from ending his career.

So it's pretty normal that he takes the most money, while he can, and he'll certainly have nice stats in that D'Antoni offense that always favours guys that can shoot the ball.

So let's see what's out there for our TPE's and some 2nd rounders or Foye/Cook and/or Gomes + some 2nd rounders.

Meh, it is what it is, team is still good and winning games

About Jermaine Taylor, he's a 6'4 guard, doesn't look like he's 6'4 from the clips posted. What is the news on his defense? He was a scorer in college, and even in his limited time in the NBA, he looked to score. We don't really need a scorer so much as an outside shooter who defends well, and it doesn't see like that's the kind of player he is based on his previous NBA experience.

Really wish we could get Courtney Lee off Houston.

I can't say that I'm not disappointed. I was tossing and turning on the idea that I wanted us to add JR Smith when we still had Chauncey. When he went down, it became an easy decision for me to want JR on the team.

I think there were a few factors that influenced his decision to go to the Knicks. He is from Jersey, so he'll basically be back home. The Knicks had more money to offer. Linsanity definitely played a huge part in this. They have strung together 7 straight Lins despite having injuries to Melo, Stoudemire and Davis. Now they're back at .500 in the 8th seed with more victories on the way. JR gets the opportunity to play on the biggest stage (MSG) with the most hype and make more money along the way. Had they not gone on a 7-game Linning streak (and stayed in the hole they were in), then perhaps he would have chosen us.

I don't know much about Jermaine Taylor at all except that he was with the Rockets not too long ago. We need a 2/3 that can defend both positions and spread the floor. Our assets include expirings (Foye, Cook), Bledsoe, $3.83M TPE and a $2.75M TPE. March 1st is the day that over 100 players will be eligible to be traded and we will see movement. Players may be bought out or waived as well. I hope Neil has done his homework and is working the phones.
