When Glenn Consor asked him to explain why the Wizards laid an egg against the Golden State Warriors but played hard against the Lakers, Nick's reply was something like, "well the Lakers are a good team and the building was full, so you want to go out there and put in a great effort." I can envision McGee giving the same type of answer.
I think you are reading too much into this. What exactly is he supposed to say? Bear in mind that he's not the most articulate fellow in the world.
Basically, he was saying that the Wizards really wanted to give a strong effort for all the fans who came to watch. There's nothing wrong with that.
I dont know, how about a response like, "I can't explain why we didn't come out with energy against the Warriors...we need to learn how to come out and play hard against every team like we did against the Lakers." That is essentially the answer that both Mason and Booker gave to the same question.
I don't think I am reading too much into his answer. Young has a history of playing well against teams like the Lakers and disappearing against other teams. I think Young is a lot like McGee. I think its more important to him to have hype and highlights than to actually get wins. I'd rather have more guys like Booker, Mack, Seraphin, ect, that may not have as much god given talent or physical attributes as as Young and McGEE, but approach the game with more of a competitive, workman-like attitude.
