Mike D'antoni isn't a fit here, mostly because of his price tag. The Knicks blew up because of how poorly put together that roster is, plain and simple.
The Melo trade and subsequent extension (under the old CBA) destroyed them and they never recovered. Anyone with half a brain and an internet connection could have predicted that Melo and Amare didn't fit well together because they both used a ton of possessions, didn't pass much and struggled defensively.
If they had waited they could have held on to Gallinari, Chandler, Mosgov, Felton and three draft picks and been in a position to go after whomever they wanted in free agency -- Paul, Howard, Deron, Melo, etc.
D'antoni was dealt a losing hand. He got this team to play the 10th best defense in the league. He can definitely succeed somewhere with the right roster.
