Cap room is meaningless if players don't want to sign here. Odds are that we'd have to throw more money than anyone just to get a mediocre player that's not even in the same stratosphere as Anthony.
That is why I would prefer Carmelo Anthony to anyone in this draft besides Anthony Davis.
Barnes isn't 20 yet and I don't think he's all that good. Drummond is 18. The Wizards are already a low-IQ group. They will continue to stink until they get talented veteran leaders.
It won't happen today or tomorrow, but the Wizards should consider trading the pick in the offseason for someone like Anthony.
Anthony is fools gold. He does not make teams better, period. I wouldn't trade any asset the team has for him that's worth anything. Heck I wouldn't trade for him period because of his onerous contract. A few wise mediots and commentators and metrics guys argued this point vociferously a year+ ago when he kept trying to force his way to NY, screaming at NY and it's fans that #1 Melo would not improve the team substantially and was not an elite difference maker and #2, if they yielded to Denver's demands, they'd be stripped of all the assets that could actually make them something to begin with. In the end the fool owner and his toadies overruled the intelligent GM and sold everything to get a glorified ball stopping chucker who yes, is an amazing scorer, but other than that is a total non-entity. That isn't to say he has no value. Clearly, he does. But he is not a difference maker, he isnt even close to a top 10 player in the league, and to treat him, and pay him like one when he can easily have close to a net negative effect on your team is clinically insane. Im glad he arrived to wreck the Knicks just as they were clearing off the worst of their contracts. Now they're screwed for another half-decade with two new mind numbingly stupid contracts for non-difference making players in Stoudemire and Melo. Excellent. There actually is a team stupider than ours. That always makes me feel better. We most definitely DO NOT WANT HIM, and he won't be coming here anyway. He'll be staying in NY, much to their fans dismay, now that they can clearly see the mistake they made in pursuing him.
As for McGee, I would trade him now too, while I have consistently argued that he will get at least 10 mill on the open market (the people that don't think so are delusional in my view), it is not in our interests to pay him that much. We'd be much wiser to sell him now.
I'd also stop with the insanity of attaching Blatche to any of these deals. People hate Blatche far more than they like picking up ANY of our players (save perhaps Wall). Amnesty him in the summer, and trade the assets you can NOW for picks and/or young players. Quit being stupid FO, I know it's hard, but you can do it!
