I'm more and more impressed with the subtle things done by the gawky looking center. He looks like he'll fill a roster for a while on winning teams in this league.
Big +1 here.
Trivia question: Who was the top shot-blocker in the NCAA this year? Anthony Davis, right?
Actually, if you filter out role players (looking only at players averaging more than 12 minutes per game), Withey has the top Block % in the country. He blocked 15.3% of opponent's shots, while Davis blocked 13.7% of opponents' shots.
Think about that - about 1 in 6 shots from KU opponents were blocked by one guy. If opponents shot 50% on all other shots, that still would leave a Defensive FG% of 42.3% when Withey is on the floor.
Withey is already 22 years old, but is a Junior based on his commitment to Arizona, then transferring to KU after Lute Olson retired. Don't know if he'll declare, the draft sites semm to think he'll go back for his Senior year, which would be smart.
But - it's easy to imagine him on the Wiz as a specialist providing the length that we don't currently have (at least until we draft Davis...). He could be our "in case of emergency" player, for when an opposing frontcourt has too much length for Nene & KSera. And he'd be enough of a deep rotation player that you wouldn't worry about sitting him in between emergencies.
So - maybe next year? After we draft a star on the wings and add a big time FA next summer? Withey would be a nice finishing piece, huh?
