i only dismissed this guy because i knew absolutely nothing about him.

It's not like Dunlap is the only teacher that was available. There were plenty of better coaching prospects available out there but they would clearly be more expensive like a Joerger or a Malone. Nobody is saying that the cheap way can't work. I remember Memphis paying some pretty good dollars for Iavaroni but when they fired him they went to Lionel Hollins who got peanuts. Another example is the Clippers after Dunleavy Sr. they went to Vinny Del Negro. But this was definitely the cheap way, if a GM has a blank check to get whoever they want Dunlap is not going to be near the top of the list

Hollins and Del Negro are both terrible though

Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. Kudos to getting to acceptance so quickly. Seriously though, he may well be a good fit for a young team, especially if he has a strong coaching staff with him.

Hollins is definitely not "terrible"

Yeah, a strong support staff is key. If guys like Grgurich are brought in I'm satisfied. Please god, find a big man coach better than that Heavy D lookalike we had this year.

People seem to be forgetting that we are the Charlotte **** Bobcats and how many coaches of note wanted the job exactly??

Malone-Wants the Portland/Orlando job-we were his backup plan
Shaw-Wants the Orlando/Portland job-we were his backup plan
Snyder-Would have been a good choice but we'd be getting the same scrutiny we're getting for Dunlap
Sloan-Feigned interest and pulled out
McMillan-Classic retread who is a good coach but would want us to win too quick-LB 2.0

I'm glad we've got a good coach on the cheap, it's a credit to us and not a knock.

MJ was paying LB out the wazoo and what did that bring us??

Look at all D'Antoni's championships for all the money he's earnt.

Jersey/Brooklyn paying a mint to Avery has got them heaps of wins hasn't it?

Thibedeaux's crap cause he hasn't got a huge salary.

I don't even care about Dunlap as much as I wanna hear this Grgurich guy confirmed. This dude has a stellar reputation for player development. I want him

Getting Grgurich is more important than the hiring of Dunlap as KembaWalker stated, in my opinion.

Great hire by Bobcats! Mike Dunlap is one of the most creative defensive minds I've ever worked with. Welcome back to the NBA!

I think he'll get the boys in shape. Might even knock some sense into Tyrus. On a team of young people, having an excellent teacher of the game isn't the worst move we could make.

I think the "assistant at a college program" is distracting people. A good coach is a good coach period.

What would over/under before he shoves Tyrus like Silas did (starting counting with first day of pre-season camp)?

I wonder who Dunlap's asistant would be. If a NCAA assistant is good enough for our head coach I hope they at least were on bench before.

St. John's assistant Mike Dunlap was hired Monday as head coach by the Charlotte Bobcats, the school said in a statement released early Tuesday morning.

NBA league sources told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard the Bobcats will make an official announcement Wednesday at a press conference in Charlotte.

Sloan pulled himself out of the running last week, and after meeting with Shaw and Snyder, Jordan decided to re-open the field and brought Dunlap back in for an interview on Monday, sources say. Impressed, Jordan offered Dunlap the job.

Cho told ESPN.com's Andy Katz on Monday night that "a strong emphasis in player development was extremely high on our priority list," in response to the Dunlap hire. Dunlap is known as a teacher of the game amid his peers in college and in the NBA. - ESPN

I stole this from another board. But let me just say that that I don't believe Broussard that mj re open the interview process. He is trying to cover his butt for being the first to report that the cats were down to 3 candidates for the coaching position. The cats are notorious for giving the media false information. Anybody remember draft night when both chad ford and Woj. were reporting the cats wanted the guy that the cavs eventually drafted instead of biyombo?

Broussard is trash. Rick Bonnell was the first to report the story, and although I don't like a lot of Bonnells work Broussard tried to act like he was the one who broke the story. May not sound like a big deal, but its a slap in the face to local media. Bonnell sounded kind of pissed on his twitter.
