Jordan Hill begins to get wooed by suitors

Post#1 » by dockingsched » Sun Jul 1, 2012 5:54 am

first up, the wolves. next apparently are the warriors, heat, and magic.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nba--laker ... cCtk68vLYF

The Los Angeles Lakers' bid to re-sign free-agent forward Jordan Hill will have to withstand the available salary-cap space of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Hill, 24, plans to travel to Minneapolis on Monday to discuss a deal with the Timberwolves management, league sources said. The T'wolves could have as much as $20 million in cap space to spend on free agents.

Minnesota also has a strong interest in trying to make a trade for Lakers star Pau Gasol.

The Lakers can offer Hill a four-year deal worth nearly $17 million, but the Wolves – who are also pursuing free-agent guard Brandon Roy – have the ability to make a bigger offer. After a sluggish start with the Lakers, Hill had several strong playoff performances.

The Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat and Orlando Magic also have interest in Hill, who was traded to the Lakers from Houston for Derek Fisher and a first-round pick in March.

The Lakes need to unload Blake, McRoberts, and Eyenga with Pau and keep this kid.

He reminds me of young Dale Davis.

Give him his 4 million a year and get rid of McRoberts (and others: Blake, Eyenga).

Lakers will regret letting him go if he signs somewhere for less than 5 million a year.

Guys who can rebound, block shots, and defend C and PF don't grow on trees ... pretty soon he'll be hitting twenty footers.

With 20 mil in cap space they can pursue Harden or even Ray Allen, who will be a perfect fit at SG instead of Wes Johnson or at least force OKC to match a bad offer. Instead they are making offers to every other idiot on the market.

Who can offer him the most money? Anyone know if he has a preferred destination?

Dale Davis was an all-star, and one of the better big men defenders in the game, period. Jordan Hill ain't no Dale Davis.

Okay?

Notice I said young Dale Davis. I know hill ain't Dale Davis, but he definitely reminds me of young dale Davis, before he was an all star and on of the better defenders in the league.

Hill is a physical, long, 6'10 dude, who can rebound, defend, block shots, play PF and C and seems to those things happily without caring about scoring ... that was Dale Davis.

Maybe if I'd said Terry Davis you'd have been happier.

Calm down. Davis was a career 8/7 player. He was a SOLID defender. Don't make him out to be a perennial all star. Jordan can have the same kind of career Davis had. Hustle player and good defender.

If Omer Asik can get 8 mil per year I'm sure someone will throw around 4-5 mil per year at least at Hill

He isn't coming back...

... but if the Lakers couold somehow clear Blake, Eyenga, and McRoberts from the payroll, they could and should be able to sign him to a similar-type deal.

the lakers max offer to hill starts in the mid 3mil range and maxes out at 4 yrs 17 mil. doesn't matter what they clear.

You don't understand.

The Lakers and Kupchak think of every new player as adding salary. If they clear the deadweight deals then it is extremely more likely for them to replace those deadweight deals with more affordable dollar for dollar/value deals.

If you clear the 12 million in commited salary to Eyenga, Blake, and McRoberts then they's give Hill his 4 million dollar deal.

Understand. Other than that you're right, the Lakers can spend the same amount to Hill regardless of who they cut loose or not ... they just won't spend it unless they can dump monaey first ... especially McRoberts (who is esssentially "taking" Hill's money).

@ALL HAIL

No, you don't understand. LA does not own his full bird rights. In the mid $3mil range is the max LA can offer him.

LA would have to front load the money in his deal to get it at $4mil in the first couple of years. Still, the max he can make (with LA) is $17mil over 4 years.

I'm not sure what I don't understand my man.

What you're saying is correct and has already been established as true.

What you and doc may or may not undrstand is that the Lakers don't have an aversion to paying Hill.

They have an aversion to paying Hill when they already have money committed to McRoberts, Blake, and to a lesser extent Eyenga.

If McRoberts, alone, was dumped, the Lakers would give Hill his money. McRoberts deal, alone, is preventing the Lakers from paying Hill.

I've seen it a thousand times from this front office. They will not sign a guy, even if he can help, if that new guy is taking minutes from another guy who is already on the books.

They did it for years when Luke Walton sucked, not signing an adequate replacement. They continue to do it now with Steve Blake. There were plenty of guys who could have come here for the minimum who would've been better than Blake and they passed. Why?

Because their philosophy is: If the guy is being paid, he needs to play in the rotation, earn his paycheck, and hopefully raise his value.

I understand the salary restrictions my man, I'm not sure who really understands the Laker's budgeting/"cost cutting" philosophy though.

You don't think the Lakes want Hill? I do.

But they won't sign him for 4 mill with McRoberts already here making 3.

Lakers have helped a couple of guys make a name for themselves the last couple of seasons. Off the top of my head I think of Ariza and Ronny getting some nice deals because of their time with the Lakers. The same might happen with Jordan Hill. If we are going to let Hill go to the T'Wolves I really hope they are willing to work out a sign and trade involving Beasely.
