I'm somewhat surprised that the Celtics and Magic can't come up with a deal since a short term Howard rental makes the most sense to Boston. Perhaps, Orlando's desire for cap relief and Boston's desire to not upset Rondo unless they know it would work are preventing serious discussions...assuming they haven't already previously occurred. The other mitigating factor is the Celtics may rather be a playoff team for 5-6 years with Rondo helping lead them then a more serious title contender for 2 and then a lottery team.
Rondo + Bass + 2 unprotected first round picks years into the future(2017, 2019) and a very early second round pick next year. Sure Orlando doesn't have a need for Bass but he has agreed to a reasonable extension so he can be flipped by Orlando for an expiring contract if need be.
If the Magic want to just have picks and really tank, they could flip Rondo and his very reasonable contract for a couple of lottery picks around next years draft. Rondo is probably worth around the 4th and 8th picks in a typical draft. But in last years draft, 80% of Celtics fans wouldn't have traded him for even that because the Celtics are in win now mode and rebuild in a few years.
This trade would only make sense from Boston's perspective if Howard was willing to sign a one year extension to give Howard/KG/PP/Bradley/Sullinger a two year window to compete for a title.
After that, the Celtics could trade him to NY/Brooklyn for 3 first round picks and an expiring contract.
If Howard did sign in Boston for more then just one additional year, then perhaps the trade agreement could have a clause that Orlando gets another number 1 pick.
Lastly, I realize my trade suggestion isn't "fair value" for Howard but I do think its better then the other proposals I have heard and that are somewhat realistic. I'd so much rather have Rondo at 12 million then Lopez at more its not even funny. And I'd rather have Rondo at his reasonable contract then Bynum on a much more expensive contract. Maybe the Houston or Atlanta offers could potentially be better.
Boston should be willing to do a 2 year rental of Howard but it makes no sense for a team like OKC. The Celtics can possibly placate his agent and Howard by promising him to trade him to the Knicks, Nets, Chicago or the Clippers after the two years are up.
