I posted this idea sometime last year and people called me crazy.

Crazy like a fox, BB.

Someone needs to do a "Exit Linsanity" stock graph for when Lin leaves

Well, there's your luxury tax payment right there.

If the stock takes a 10% hit which could very well happen, then we're talking $271 million.

I hope some major shareholders are calling James Dolan right now and complaining.

Not signing Jeremy Lin does not make financial sense. How much clearer can this be?

folks need to look at the stock on July 5th (news of the first offer sheet) when the stock was 39 dollars...

looks like the market has already priced in a what if scenario....

although I can see a sharp 1 to 3 dollar drop if Lin is not matched...

it could go the other way...

old adage is you "buy on rumor sell on news..."

in this case it would be sell on rumor, buy back on news

here is a idea... dont want to pay money for Lin...

do a new share issuance... proceeds of the offering to go into general administrative funds and pay for Lins salary...

is it possible Dolan's playing the stocks? buy cheap later then announce the match so stock jumps tomorrow.

I'm no wall street expert, but I imagine the SEC might take something of an issue with this.

I'd assume - but I'm not certain - you can inside trade on your own company.

Yes.... people with insider information do this stuff ALL THE TIME. Once in a blue moon they'll get caught, but I'd assume about 95% of it goes unnoticed.

If you care so much about MSG's share price, become a stockholder. That way, you wouldn't be rooting for the price to fall.

MSG's stock price rose significantly in the immediate wake of Linsanity. There's reason to expect a sharp downturn if he's cut.

Corellation does not equal causation.

Doesn't exclude it either.

My prediction is that the stock tanks the last couple of hours of trading today with no assurances that Lin will be back. It has been holding steady most of the day today at around -.75% but I expect it to take a dip soon.

Well I was wrong in my prediction and MSG closed at -.53% which is still significant, particularly since the Dow gained +.62%. I think that there was too much positive spin out there on Wall Street downplaying the financial implications of losing Lin that prevented the stock from totally tanking, though the overall loss since the offer sheet was offered is still greater than what it would cost to match Lin.

Anyways, I think Dolan and the FO will take this to mean that it won't be a financial catastrophe to let Lin go and we don't match him tonight.

Guys...Lin IS NOT Bigger than MSG. There will be a little hit, and then it will go back to being the world's most famous arena. MSG is not only about the Knicks...

Nobody's saying that.

But Lin himself does make a significant impact. I hope Lin becomes a first-ballot HOFer who also cracks open the Asian basketball markets, so Dolan gets skewered for both his basketball and business decisions.

If Lin's career takes off, I would be pretty incensed if I were a major MSG stockholder.

The fact were having a discussion about stock market on a basketball site is enough reasoning for me to bring the kid back. This has never been done before for any player. Unless the Knicks brass know something about Lins knee we dont, then this move makes no sense. And on the court, who knows. The intrigue of finding out would have paid dollar for dollar the expense of the luxary tax.

Fair enough, but if I were a betting man I wouldn't count on Jeremy Lin being a first ballot Hall of Famer. Especially if Yao most likely won't be one.

I'm not saying that either.

What I am saying is that Dolan is taking a risk here. He made a cost-saving decision that could make him look very bad not just to Knick fans but to his actual shareholders. Lin doesn't need to be a HOF'er to have a significant impact on the global basketball economy. He just needs to recapture Linsanity.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet Dwight Howard to Houston just became a lot more likely. If that happens and he clicks with Jeremy, MSG stockholders will be stuck watching it all on TV. If they end up better than the Knicks, the media -- and likely the market -- won't be kind on Jimmy.
