This is a case where a man had a gun illegally (not a legal gun holder) and took it into a gun free zone (no guns were allowed in the theater).

The guns aren't the problem, the same way forks don't make people fat, its the individuals using the guns.

There was a situation in Florida where someone was holding a place up and a legal gun holder shot the man down to protect the innocent 3rd parties.

The situation is tragic no matter how you spin it. These people should be remembered peacefully.

However at moments like this its important not to jump the gun and to continue strip the liberties of Americans and enact a police state by flooding movie theaters with security and police.

What the hell are you talking about? The guns were all legally purchased and he passed all background checks. Way to make up facts to push a stupid agenda that has no basis in reality.

The four weapons recovered in the deadly shootings in Colorado all were purchased by the suspect in the case from retail gun stores in Colorado in the last two months, according to a federal law enforcement official.

"Background checks, as required by federal law, were properly conducted, and (Holmes) was approved," Whiteley said in a statement.

And this whole notion that he was in a gun free zone is meaningless spin. We wouldn't need to demarcate gun free zones if guns weren't so readily available in the first place.

When i saw the news (at home after watching the movie) i felt terrible, its kind of hard to understand, from an european point of view, that a civilian can buy assault riffles, grenades, automatic weapons and all kind of military gear (seriously? full body kevlar vests?), but also makes it harder to understand how in the hell in those days, that kind of shopping doesnt ring a freaking red light in the secret services... i wont enter in your constitutional right to buy weapons, because is probably sterile and would be a knee jerk reaction, but someone shoul tell the FBI,NSA,CIA or whoever is in charge of counter terrorism vigilance, that when someone buys assault riffles, several guns, a lot of ammo and full body armors... maybe a good thing to keep a close eye on that individual...

Sad thing, if this crazy nutjob (a PHD neuroscientist in the making, wtf) was from muslim ascendance, he would be controlled, but as the Utoya island massacre (by another **** nazy nutjob) has teached us, nowadays terrorist can be as white and "normal" as it gets...

I'm atheist, but as probably those victims have christian beliefs, i hope their god receives them and comforts their souls, and for the families (on those acts, the ones who survive and lose someone close are also victims, and have to endure the pain for life) if there is an account to make a donation and some of you can inform me of it, even being unemployed here in spain, i will donate the 250 i won today in a poker event, is nothing, but i want to help.

Of course you do, we just don't see it here in the US because our media doesn't inundate us with foreign police blotters, they only report terrorist related incidents with regularity. But other countries have the same type of crime that we do, and some of those "peaceful" countries have to deal with monthly riots and Molotov cocktails when the communists and anarchists need a hug. Luckily for us, we don't get that here. We came awfully close with the Occupy Wall Street people, but it's not a routine occurrence.

As long as every person is allowed to purchase a gun in America...These types of shootings will happen.

Its stupid when I hear Guns dont kill people, people kill people.

Well, the fact that a psychopath can be sold a weapon such as a gun, means exactly what it is...Guns and People kill people.

It does. The right to own guns shall not be infringed upon. Period.

200+ years ago, the word "regulated" meant "organized" more often than not. The 2nd amendment reads "a well organized militia" instead of the "a disarmed militia because guns are scary" as gun opponents would have us believe.

Gun ownership was protected, guys didn't run down to the militia station, grab their government issued gun and run off to fight. When trouble arose, those men ran into their homes and grabbed their own gun and then ran out into the fields. They supplied their own weapons, if they wanted a rifle they owned a rifle. If they wanted a pistol, they owned a pistol. If they wanted a cannon, they had those too. That's how men protected themselves and there is no reason for that to change because of one lone moron.

Seriously...WTF??? The crime rates in european countrys are so low that, for example here in Barcelona, PICKPOCKETERS!!! are one of the top 5 concerns of the population right after unemployement, economy, the politicians and the cut of social privileges...
Just a couple of days back, in Toronto, a shooting that killed 2 people was considered by the media and police, the worst incident in decades... in France a terrorist who killed 4 with guns was the ONLY concern of the media during almost a month... as i said, i wont enter the guns prohibition debate because goes nowhere, but in the countrys where civilians cant buy weapons... the crime rates, the gunshots, the violent deaths caused by guns... are 1/100 the ratio of USA.

Well all of this guy's guns were legally bought. To think that if there was a ban on assault weapons that he would just go out and buy one on the black market is completely unfounded and a defeatist attitude.

Are you serious?

That's exactly what he did here. Unless of course you think he picked up the tear gas and explosives as an impulse buy while standing in the Walmart checkout.

Instead of focusing so hard on trying to justify banning guns because you don't like them, take the time to absorb the facts that are staring you right in the face. This guy wanted to kill people, he would have done whatever he needed to in order to accomplish that, including buying weapons and materials on the black market.

It's a catch-22 if you are so paranoid that you feel you need an ASSAULT weapon to be safe then you are too mentally ill to own a weapon like that to begin with.

If you are just a gun enthusiast and a responsible gun owner it's time for you to STEP UP and look at the big picture. A 3 month old was just murdered in a public place - is that life worth less than what you get out of owning a gun like that?

If a 3 month old was murdered with an extension cord, would you be asking for a ban on the sale or ownership of extension cords?

What about cars? More people are killed in this country by automobiles than by guns. Should we ban cars too? After all, cars are used as weapons by irrational people, and alot of young innocent kids are killed in car accidents. So do we blame the car or the driver?

Tell the NRA aka. the national gun manufacturers association you want no part of their organization as long as they push their "ridiculous" agenda.

Why is this the NRA's fault?

Would you blame Toyota if someone used their camry to mow down a group of people? Silliness to blame anyone other than the shooter.

Ok. then. We keep the right to bear arms but when someone commits a crime using an assault type weapon you give them a stiffer penalty that with a regular handgun. Reasonable right? The problem is, the people you support ( the NRA) will never let this happen.

Why would you? That's ridiculous and I'll show you why.

Nutjob #1 - He buys a legal hunting rifle (holds 6 rounds or less) and walks into a children's daycare center and kills 6 preschoolers during snack time.

Nutjob #2 - He uses the exact same rifle as Nutjob #1, except he replaces the stock magazine with an after market mag that holds more than 6 rounds and makes that rifle an "assault rifle". Nutjob #2 walks into a bank and fires one shot killing one person before being apprehended by police.

So using your logic, Nutjob #2 should get the stiffer penalty because he used an "assault rifle", while anyone with a conscience would agree that Nutjob #1 commit the more heinous crime. Is that the type of justice you want?

You punish people based on their crime, not how many rounds are in their clip.

Right, assault weapons are not dangerous. But the laws that would have prevented this mad man from getting this kind of gun are.

Got it.

If you value your freedom, then yes overbearing laws are more dangerous. History proves that ten times over.

And any object is dangerous in the hands of a lunatic. How many things do you want to ban?

That's the parent's choice. We have no idea what type of schedule they keep, some people work 2nd and 3rd shift jobs and their family gets used to being up with them. Just because you're used to a certain schedule, that doesn't mean that everybody else is on the same one. I think blaming the parents is pretty low JMO.

I beg to differ. Everybody thinks that the US is the big bad bully on the block and the rest of the world is a utopia. Violent crimes happen all the time in those countries, it was just a few weeks ago when that guy dismembered his boyfriend and sent his body parts through the mail to the conservative party headquarters in Canada and an international manhunt ensued.

And European countries sell guns, the ones that are more strict just can't have more than a 2 round capacity. I work for a gun manufacturer and we make them to meet their requirements. Of course the people over there will buy second hand mags to beef up their guns, defeating the purpose of the ban. The only people who are effected by overbearing laws are the people who are law abiding citizens. The rest will get their guns anyway they have to.

Remember prohibition? It's remembered as one of the biggest eras of alcoholic consumption in this country's history because people will find a way to get what they want, regardless with how many laws you pass.

There are many different explanations, one of the biggest is that people don't have guns in their homes to protect themselves (and those do get figured into the total), so your number is going to automatically be lower. That doesn't prove that restricting guns works, it just removes instances of self-defense from the equation.
