I don't know if in France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Portugal, Austria, Hungary, Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia, any african country and the majority of asian countries know who Tiger Woods is, but if you ask in my country to 100 people, only 3 or 4 would know who Tiger is, and I doubt that in all the countries I said is pretty much different. So Tiger, is a less global icon than others in this list and when I mean others, I'm saying Messi/Ronaldo.

Im not so sure about that. Even my 66 year old father knows him. Maybe is all the stuff about the scandal, the gilette ads, the name Tiger is catchy or just he is/was really maketeable, but he knows him. Yet he doesnt know a **** about golf.

I finally start to understand how self centered some US-Americans are. I mean what do we expect from fans that call their national champions "world champion"?

Kobe Byant 5 time world champion wohooo!

True, Americans are the only people that call their national champions ''world champion''
I never see anything like that in any other country.

Yeah, what i wanted to imply is that more than 3 or 4 people out of 100 would recognize the name Tiger Woods in Spain (Im Spanish).Everywhere ive travelled ive seen barca shirts or even people for another countries i know (e.g. Iran) follow Barca.

I asked 3 Austrians at our company if they know any famous Basketball player.

The results were

Michael Jordan
Shaq
Charles Barkey

I asked what about Lebron James and Kobe Bryant. They only heard of Lebron James being some great Highschool player or something lol

Well, man, maybe in your area, if I ask in my environment the percentage won't go higher than that, I've already some of my friends that are deep into sports (football, some NBA, F1 and MotoGP) and some of them doesn't know him. In fact, people here didn't know who was Severiano Ballesteros (an All Time Great golf player born here) until he was dead, and you know that here a player like Sergio Rodriguez was treated like n icon even though he was a scrub only because he was Spanish. People here are not into golf, I have seen more news about Sergio Garcia in foreign websites like the ESPN or Skysports than in the Spanish ones.

You're being an idiot. Please stop.

Messi is more known AROUND THE WORLD than Kobe. It's a fact. If you don't like it; tough. Water is wet, the sky is blue and Messi is more of a global icon than Kobe. <

To put things in perspective - the world`s population is around 7,039,000,000 while America`s population is around 314,347,000. So, 95% of the world`s people live outside of the USA. Soccer is by a huge margin the most popular sport on earth. Can you see how Messi and Ronaldo could easily be 1 and 2 on a true international list?

No he isn't. I posted undeniable proof. Here is some more. This is the first related video that pops up when you youtube Messi
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3JrUU617gQ.
It has 70,000 views.
This is the first video that pops up when you youtube Kobe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsaL_BDAeqA
It has over 1,200,000 views

If you live in America, ask your co-workers who Messi is. Most will ask who is she, or I've never heard of her. I know this is the Internet and hipsters want to act "cool and in the know" so you all are voting Messi. But stop for a minute and look around. Soccer is never on TV for a reason. Few people watch it.

 Thats a troll post, you just wrote that to get reactions lol

I really dont know any country where golf is a huge spectated sport, maybe Australia?
So how is it possible for Woods to be the biggest icon?
I just dont get how ignorant certain ppl are when it comes to this subject

Some poster, I can't remember his name, implied that as Woods played around the world in a lot of tournament and being the best on his sport he was necessarily going to be well known. I don't agree with that, I think that Formula 1 is a bigger sport all around the world than golf, and if I ask people in the countries where they ran if they know Fernando Alonso or Sebastian Vettel I not sure that they are celebrities in every single country... Or do you USA people know them? Because they ran in the Austin Circuit and they used to run in Indianapolis... Or do you know Jorge Lorenzo, Casey Stoner or Valentino Rossi (for me, this one, is another who should be in this list, probably with Michael Schumacher) because they ran in Laguna Seca each year? And I probably think, that specially the F1 drivers are far more well known in more countries and by more people than Tiger Woods.

Maybe Scotland, maybe Ireland, and in the thread I created a couple of days ago, there were a couple of Scottish guys who said that football ruled their nation, even though golf was an important one.

Can be. Anyway i guess Tiger is more known than Seve in Spain. Maybe the word is not icon, maybe it is "known".

Ok, and in this I agree with you, but If you think about it, what kind of people in Spain knows about Tiger? The only span I can think about is, a male, from 20 to 60/70 and what percentage of them? I can't think about a teenager or a kid knowing about him, I've never known a girl/woman who knew about Tiger Woods, even though the subject has not been touched. And I don't know, and probably I'm mistaken, but I think that most of the people in our country probably know him because of his affairs with a lot of girls and because he cheated his wife, not because he is probably the best golf player ever.

Did I do something wrong? Did you read my previous and more argumentative posts in the previous pages? Or it is just that I disagree with you and I showed you a way to do the same you did in the post I quoted from you to discredit some of the biggest USA icons while talking about sports and their relevance in the rest of the world?
