I don't understand the thought process of "we need to make the playoofs/win games so our guys don't develop losing habits"
What are losing habits?
"Losing habits exist in organisations that permit a "losing culture"... in organisations that allow players to set the standard, in organisations where there isn't a strong voice or an authority figure that demands a set standard regardless of age, playoff experience, talent level etc
With us Gores and his boys set the standard... then Joe and his office crew... then Frank and his staff... the players are employees paid to deliver a certain standard... and wins and losses have absolutely nothing to do with the standards that should be acceptable in the organisationAs it was pointed out in both the New York Times and Sports Illustrated, the Spurs rely on 19th-century social reformer Jacob Riis, who came up with the Stonecutter Credo, which states: "When nothing seems to help, I go look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that blow that did it, but all that had gone before
"Losing habits" and a "losing culture" start at the top of any organisation... "winning habits" or a "winning culture" is all about work ethic... and knowing that while you might not be getting the results you want right now the PROCESS is correct... follow the process and good things will happen
I don't think there are habits that come from losing. However, winning can create a domino effect. A winning team gains more confidence and recognizes the fruits of their labor. IMO they'll be more inclined to work even harder in the off season because they realize they have the talent to get better and that putting in the work actually has tangible benefits. No matter how much of a professional you are, following a blind process can hurt morale. Corporations have already figured that out. Forty years ago, promotions were far and in between and retirement packages were defined benefit plans (pensions). Today, young employees are promoted ever 2-3 years, with contribution benefit plans and their productivity has increased ten fold. Its human nature to desire tangible benefits for your work and if the team doesn't see that, their motivation to abide by the coaches ways deteriorates. A winning culture taps into a team's potential.
On a side note, I don't think NY or Miami sweeps anyways. Neither team matches up particularly well with a big front court and both teams will struggle with quick guards.
yeah, all-star draft picks and trades don't make a team better. it's the domino effect of already being a winning team.
