Option 1: Get Millsap. Somehow. I don't see this as being terribly likely, but you never know.
Option 2:
- Move Ross for Jared Dudley. Dudley is a great fit here next to Gay, DD, and Fields. Hasn't played well this year, but is in a terrible situation there in Phoenix. Ross is a good and realistic return for Dudley.
- Pay Chicago's luxury tax bill (cash) for their first rounder this year. Draft Kabongo.
- Decline Lucas' team option.
- Assuming Gray picks up his option, move Gray for Gerald Green.
- Amnesty Bargs. Not the most popular option, but clearing his salary allows us to add pieces and build for next year.
- Re-sign Telfair for 2 years, $6 million. Fair deal for a decent backup.
- Sign Brandan Wright for half the MLE.
- Bring in Kwame Brown for the other half of the MLE.
- Lock up Lowry for a 3 year extension.
Lowry/Telfair/Kabongo
DD/Dudley/Green
Gay/Fields/Green/Kleiza
Amir/Wright/Acy
Val/Brown
It's not completely ideal, but we give up no future picks and maintain some flexibility.
The problem with this is that all the guys coming in are backups.
We have the same starting lineup which, while it should improve, is a team with a losing record. To go to all that work, and use all those assets and resources, just to bolster the bench of a bad team is not the way to go forward, in my opinion.
Remember: this is a stars league and your goal has to be to get stars on the team any way you can, one at a time.
Millsap is not known as a star, but he is playing like one. He's playing just as well as a lot of better known guys like David Lee and David West. He'd be a great addition at starting PF, letting Amir come off the bench at both PF and C. An upgrade at 2 positions.
Re. amnestying Andrea. Depends on what he does the rest of the year to boost his trade value. Amnestying him would be a huge chance lost - and it's totally on Colangelo, once again - to improve the roster. But Morey did something similar last year when he amnestied Scola, who was still a valuable player. And I think another team would pick Andrea up on waivers for around 5M a year, so we'd be on the hook for a lot less than his real salary.
Essentially exchanging Andrea for Millsap would be a big win.
