But people do take the timeline of every ACL surgery over the past few years as a guide for when Rose should return. Those three get mentioned the most because they all happened within months of each other.

Rose has said it's MENTAL with him, when HE feels comfortable. It's no longer about his knee, it's about how comfortable he feels with it. The knee is not going to get any better, it is what it is, there's just loosening up of scar tissue now and that may already be done with at this point.

I agree, it is mental. The knee itself is healed, and it is all about comfort level.
Only Rose can make that call.

The problem (IMO) is that Rose is set that level at "pre-injury"...which simply isn't realistic in less than a year, especially without stepping foot on the court.

No one steps back on the court 100% comfortable post ACL surgery. Maybe if he waits two full years, he will simply have gotten used to the new normal...and will be comfortable...but that isn't a realistic option. He is going to get to his "new normal" regadless...so he might as well start the journey and help his team now (well, a month ago).
Jealousy is a sickness.......get well soon....

Hardaway: "Its something you just have to go out and do" not to mention 11 months.

Read between the lines. Hardaway took 11 months before he was actually ready to go out there and have faith in his mentality to play. Rose had surgery on May 12, 2012. He's at 11 months. If Rose takes longer, so what.

Magic: Later that summer, he dunked over a big man and got his confidence back. Can't that happen with Derrick should he feel/look lost out there now?

You forgot the part where Magic came back immediately when he was medically cleared, because he thought "that's what he was supposed to do" and he looked and felt lost. Magic talked about that on an ESPN Halftime show and you could hear nothing but regret in his voice about it.

I hope he is being a douchebag by refusing to play, because that means he's being selfish about this injury which is exactly what he needs to do. Nothing's come out that Rose isn't physically healthy. Everything's come out that Rose isn't mentally healthy. His brain isn't on the same page as his knee. That's only something he can figure out and not a doctor.

agree....idk why folks have such a hard time accepting this. looks like reggie rose is in bulls fans heads.

I laughed at the ROckets when they had ROyce White and his mental problem with flying. But Dammit, It ain't funny when it's concerning one of our own.

HEY DERRICK, Just pass the ball or take jumpshots if you fear the knee snapping or cracking or something.

Bulls will always be bigger than Rose. It's time for Derrick to HAUL ASS and play!

Props to all the injured Bulls grinding it out... JoNo, Deng, KURT hinrich...

In due time, he will get there. Just not on your or anyone elses timeline. His timeline is the only one that matters. And most reasonable folks are fine with that.

and how long was that after he was cleared to play? i guarantee it wasn't over 2 months

hardaway's injury was a loooooong time ago in the context of medical advances

did i miss where someone suggested rose should have been back in games IMMEDIATELY after being cleared. please point it out to me

Not one of those guys are injured. They are hurt. Big difference. You don't play injured. Scalbrine stated the difference a few pages back in an audio clip.

you're defining reasonableness based on who agrees with you!

most of the people on this board are reasonable, generally speaking. and a strong majority feels that rose should've been playing in games for several weeks now

None of those players tore their ACL, nor are any of them as athletic or explosive as Rose. I mean, just replay in your mind how ridiculous it sounds when you say "Hey Derrick, just come play and stand in a corner and pass and take jumpshots. You don't have to move!"

This is what Noah is talking about when he says people want Rose back "for their own selfish reasons."

No, Wilbon said Rose might be playing in China as a result of him rushing back before being mentally ready to perform, which he isn't doing. Rose is playing it smart.

Read Wilbon's paragraph on Tim Hardaway and Magic Johnson's returns.

"Tim Hardaway said it took him 11 months before he was ready to play in an NBA game. "My biggest thing," he said, "was getting my head and knee on the same page, so I could do the same things I did before the injury -- doing the crossover, exploding to the basket [and] not being afraid to lay the ball up over a big guy ... I had to get to the points where I didn't fear leaping off my [injured] leg ... That was the biggest challenge I had to overcome ... It's something you just have to go out and do."

"Magic Johnson tells the story about a knee injury early in his career, after he'd already won an NBA championship. He had been medically "cleared to play" and came back because he thought he was supposed to but he couldn't find his form, felt lost on the court. It wasn't until the summer, when Magic dunked over a bigger player in a summer league game, that he was psychologically ready to be Magic Johnson again."

I hope as a Bulls fan that Rose is healthy and just being a douchebag by refusing to play.

Lol at Tim Hardaway. I heard there was a wrestler in ancient greece who had issues with recovering from an infected cut, of course, that was about 2400 years before penicillan was discovered.

Anyways, if Rose had a normal injury recovery, he should be 100% fine right now as far as injury risk. He is healed. He likely still has pain though and if that's an issue stopping him playing, he probably isn't playing next year either.

Just to be direct: There is no benefit to Rose sitting right now if his knee healed normally. Cole said originally that the healing took about 4 months after surgery. The rest of the rehab is just strengthening. Him being "selfish" doesn't help him. Quite the contrary. It slows down the time before he plays at 100% again.

If Rose's knee isn't healed, he is screwed.

Is this reasonable?

You're going to get in a pool with your friends, no matter what you do the water is going to be the same temperature, either you can jump in and get over it quicker or you can take your time SLOWLY getting into the pool while making all your friends wait on you. The outcome is the same, the only difference is the amount of time you take and you having to deal with everything for a short amount of time(jump in vs slowly entering).

I'm sorry but if Derrick was medically cleared he should have been playing games a few weeks later at the most and would be as good as he's going to get by now. The Bulls would be a better team, Derrick would be past his hangup and the FO would know what they have going into the summer.

No, a majority of folks dont understand why Rose won't conform to some arbitrary timeline based on anecdotal info. That is all. Thanks.

Kyle Korver did this. He was pretty helpful to last year's Bulls
