Melo's Sidekick (2nd Option on this team)

Post#1 » by shmeakone » Sun May 19, 2013 6:23 pm

Everyone's talking about Melo needing a legit 2nd guy to take the load off who can put up 18-20 PPG nightly. JR was the guy this season, but he disappeared in the playoffs proving that he's unreliable.

Everyone is counting Amare Stoudemire out right now & its a shame. This guy proved to me this season that he can still dominate on the offensive end putting up 14 PPG in 23.5 MPG with a per 36 of 22 PPG. Everything seemed to be working for Amare after he came back until he went out again which hurt a lot. Now I know he's never going to live up to that contract, (He did his first year as a Knick that's for sure) .. but if we don't acquire another Star quality player to help Melo out I'm not gonna be panicking & thinking that we can't get better because we can while coming back with almost the same roster. If Amare is finally healthy next season & plays in at least 70+ games during the regular season the Knicks can easily duplicate this season & maybe do better depending on the rest of the roster. Not 1 year so far have Melo & Amare been at least somewhat healthy together to create that special bond on the floor, they have though been together on the same team building trust, etc. & are just waiting for that chance where they can show it in game action. If we resign JR, he'd be our 3rd option behind Melo & Amare which would be a much more suited role. In all honesty I think we were relying on JR way too much after seeing what he can do in spurts & the expectations were way too high & he was just not ready to deliver.

IMO Chandler needs to be moved more than Amare for a young big who can block shots & rebound.

He will never be healthy, and Woodson will never play him and Melo together. The only way it works, is if the Knicks get a really good, ball dominant PG.

only way to get one is using tyson

Yeah, but Amare's been through so many injuries the last 2 seasons you gotta think that he's through that stage now. You guys honestly think Amare's gonna be averaging like 50 games played till the end of his career? He's not that fragile, last 2 seasons have just been brutal for him. The law of averages.

Melo needs a second option who is also a playmaker. That's why Stat is not a great fit. But guys who can score 20 ppg and pass are hard to come by. Ironically Gallo may have been a good fit. Eric Gordon would also be nice but he's such a huge injury risk. I think our best shot is landing Marc Gasol as a free agent in 2015. Have him operate in the high post and run hand-off screens for Melo.

Ha... reminds me of what people were saying about JR's shooting slump.

that's exactly what I'm thinking. I remember guys like Zydrunas, Grant Hill, Camby would be plagued with injuries for 3-4 years straight and when they came back they were healthy the rest of their careers.

who knows how bad gordons knees are...there is a prevailing thought he oversold it cuz he didnt want to play for pelicans

thats an easy ask; just look at his mri and it'll tell you

but thats who id advocate to shoot for, his value is down, but he would be just amazing next to melo who gets doubled

I've been saying the same thing.
What more can possible happen to his knees??

Chris Copeland has shown he can be a reliable source of offense.

Brandon Jennings and Monta Ellis: one of them will be available for trade, if not both.

The problem is the fragility of our team. We need to have Amare start at power forward and basically have him knock down corner 3's and occasionally play in the post.

Earl Barron, on our roster, has also shown he can put up points.

5% Amare is coming off the bench next season. No way Woody keeps on going with Amare off the bench opposed to starting. I'm sure Melo will be back at SF next season.

The Melo and Ama're 3 4 combination is a nightmare for us defensively. Melo is not good at guarding small fowards and is not a great rebounder for a power forward. We need a legitimate power forward that will give us rebounding and is good enough to guard threes playing with Melo. Ama're doesn't fit the bill. Taj Gibson Gibson would be perfect.

amare is just an awful fit with melo both offensively and defensively. offensively, he takes up the same spot melo usually wants, he is not a playmaker at all . defensively he is just awful.

Yeah I think you can look at next year in a optimistic or pessimistic light, both can make sense.

The Knicks overachieved this year. I don't care how well Melo or JR played, they had a team of old guys, that was oft injured (most importantly Stat, who was basically nonexistent), relied on JR and Melo.. And they still won a ton of games. There's no reason to think Melo won't be just as good next year... and JR, if he's back... Same goes for Ray, and importantly Iman who will be better.. Amare, most importantly, can only do more next year than he did this year. He showing up, staying on the court would be more valuable to this team than players growing another year older or any of the other negative stuff.

So while a pessimist can say "teams just going to be one more year older" "Rose will be back, Pacers still there" etc... Fact is, Kidd was spotty this entire year...Camby barely played... the impact of the old guys was minimal, so they being another year older, if they're even still here, can't be that impacting.......

Amar'e set the bar very low this year.. and there's no reason to think he'll be able to do better next yr... but you have to think he can't do much worse.

With a rim protector like I said, no. Chandler is more of an issue than Amare.

Ok let's say in the case of removing Tyson who exactly will we going after to replace him? And before you answer that question let me clear with you about something. Amar'e is a 6th man for the rest of his career, he can not be a second option to Melo, hell, he can't even be a 3rd because he can't stay healthy.

So now that I've brought that to your attention we're going to need a Power Forward & a Center with an offensive game. Who will they be & where are we gonna find those two players?
