As this KG/Doc talk heats up there seems to be less and less talk of of Paul Pierce, who's owed 17 million next year and 15.3 the year after that. He's 35 years old but he's always played like an old vet. Where VC had to become a 3+D specialist this year, Pierce was still able to put up his regular 19ppg/5apg/6rpg on a TS% of .559 as one of the leading scorers on a team he helped lead to the playoffs.
Where do you think he'll end up? The possible trade suitors have to have a number of things going for them.
1) They have to have some assets that Boston would want at salaries that match.
2) They'd have to be in a position where they had somebody able to convince Pierce that they meant to contend with him on board (Just as KG and Ray Allen were convinced to join the Celtics)
3) They'd have to view him as the perfect fit for what they lack on their team in order to get it to the next level in the short-term while being willing to part with those assets in order to make a splash.
Would any retoolers out there be interested in a Bargnani/Kleiza for Paul Pierce deal if Tim could convince him we mean to contend for a couple years? He'd expire the same year as Rudy so if the gamble failed you could start a rebuild then in 2015.
PG - K. Lowry
SG - P. Pierce
SF - R. Gay
PF - A. Johnson
C - J. Valanciunas
Plus, you'd have either Demar or Ross to explore in a follow-up trade to push you even further into contention territory.
