Worried this board will go nuts over what actually ends up happening, which will probably be a lot closer to something like this than it is to whatever it is people are hoping for when they blast this.

I agree, I don't think we can lure a big free agent, at least not this year, or if we do, it would be to grossly overpay (thing BG and CV). What we can do is inexpensively fill out our roster, make the playoffs, start looking like an exciting young team, and maybe next summer we get a star free agent to get us into the second round.
I hope I'm wrong, and CP3 and Iggy join our team this summer. But in case that doesn't happen, this plan seems realistic.
No offense, Lip, and you're not the first to use the word on these boards ... but why has "realistic" become a synonym for "boring?"
All joking aside, why does this offseason have to be "all in" for a guy like CP3 or else save our cap space and settle for middling role players like Brewer or Wright? Holding Paul, Howard, Josh Smith and Iggy off the table (although I personally think Iggy's more attainable), here are a bunch of "middle of the road" options, most of which have been suggested before, that would improve us far more next year and still save at least some cap space for next offseason —
- Trade for Granger (sending some salary back)
- Trade for Eric Gordon (sending some salary back)
- Trade for some combination of Lin / Asik / TRob / Parsons (facilitating a Houston salary dump so they can chase Howard)
- Trade for some combination of Biedrins / Jefferson / Bogut / Barnes / Thompson (facilitating a Golden St. salary dump so they can chase Howard)
- Sign Tyreke Evans to a front-loaded contract (the opposite of the Lin / Asik model) which the Kings would be hard-pressed to match
And yes, I know we'll never get Thompson, but as long as I was typing that line about the Warriors I felt compelled to include him. In any case, all of those deals would at least return
something more than two rookies, Marion, Brewer, Wright, and a rain check to "wait till next year."
Last note — in this whole Celtics / Clippers "Doc & KG Saga," the Celts are now apparently desperately looking to shed the long term contracts of Courtney Lee and Jason Terry ... two middling role players who they signed to long term MLE-level deals, just like you'd have us committing to Brewer and Wright. Contracts like that aren't BG / CV level albatrosses, but they really hurt your roster flexibility. We just finally got out from under a similar player with a similar contract in Jason Maxiel, and I don't want to go that route of paying fringe starters and bench rotation players $5M+ per year again.
