Ever since Shaq left, the team became Kobe's and we went all in for him. We've lived and died because of him but under the new CBA and the Celtics and Heat have defined how one can build a super team. The rules of the game have changed. Before as in the shaq-kobe era, it was enough to get 2 super stars and build around them year after year with solid role players. Now it seems to be that you have to have a big 3 with good role players.
And to get 3 super stars, financial sacrifices have to be made by almost everyone (especially the big 3). Its the cost of winning but for kobe, winning is not going to happen unless its "his way". This is not a good look for him or the org to attract other super stars or free agents. He still refuses to take a back seat to anyone and its just selfish. He commands too much control of the offense. Whether its fga or having the offense be run through him. It can't continue to happen, especially after the injury and age.
I get that he works hard, plays through pain, etc but at some point you have to let others help you win. Why he has not learned after so many years to play smarter is beyond me.
Anyways,...his position on salary is dissapointing to hear and until HE is willing to sacrifice for the betterment of the TEAM, we are not going to be a serious contender.

I heard on the radio, if Kobe said he was willing to take a pay cut, the NBA Player union would be all over him if he said this publicly. I think it's best for Kobe to say no comment when asked about next season.

No doubt, I am not suggesting a vet min by any means but a significant cut for sure. Whatever it takes to get another 2 superstars. But other 2 should also take less than a max deal (like Miami did).
Ultimately, how much is a another ring worth to Kobe? I say the more he is willing to give up, the higher the chances of winning.
I put myself in kobe's shoes and having made more money than I could ever piss away and wanting to secure my legacy by at least tying MJ in titles plus making it much more difficult for Bron to match, I would without hesitation sacrifice $20m to give me a 50/50 chance at another chip.
Its not about my salary at this point. Legacy, period.

The minimum salary is a strategic move to get max players. Saying minimum for KB24 is crazy seems to be ignoring the purpose. The idea is that he takes the minimum so that LAL can add TWO max players in 2014 (e.g., Melo and Lebron), and then another in 2015 because his cap hold will be so low. LAL will still have Bird rights, so they can then sign KB24 for 20M in 2015 after signing the third max FA (e.g., Love). Brilliant strategy, but problem is that he published it so now probably can't implement because might get nixed by league office.

"Earlier Wednesday, Bryant was quoted by Lakers Nation, a fan website, that he wouldn't be willing to take a pay cut to stay with the Lakers. Bryant later told ESPN that he was speaking in jest."

that doesn't really sound accurate. players say they will take a pay cut or say they took a pay cut all the time.

alright I guess, but if he doesn't,then that will affect the cap,so if he takes 10-15 mil who could we sign?im not saying its smartest financially for him because it isn't.im saying if he wants that 6th or 7th ring then he should do that so Mitch can sign two stars than just oneDoormatt wrote:Tylerfisher51 wrote:i don't see it happening either but what I meant was it would be smart if he wants that 6th ringhermes wrote:like the vet's min? how much is that?

Imagine Kobe playing for the minimum while Nash gets over 9 mil at age 41

all of that is really irrelevant to my point.
and which stars are you talking about exactly? because no one has shown interest in the lakers, so like doc said earlier in this thread, until max contract players commit to or show interest in signing with the lakers, theres zero reason for kobe to consider or accept a paycut.
all of this is just talk, we can all get upset with kobe or ask him to retire when his contract demands conflict with us building a good team. but that is not now.

Kobe has stated that he has no intention of even taking a pay cut. He's looking for a 3 year/$90 mill extension. Kobe can be very selfish both on and off the court. His father coaches in Thailand, and he sued his own mother for trying to unload a few jerseys to buy a house. We're not getting any hometown deals from this guy.
